Major Breast Cancer Charity Dumps Planned Parenthood

National Journal’s Meghan McCarthy reports that Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, a major breast-cancer charity, has cut off support for Planned Parenthood because of controversy over abortion and the group’s standing as a provider of generalized women’s health services. Planned Parenthood accused Susan G. Komen for the Cure of giving in to political pressure.

“We are alarmed and saddened that the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation appears to have succumbed to political pressure. Our greatest desire is for Komen to reconsider this policy and recommit to the partnership on which so many women count,” said Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, in a statement.

Grammar Tidbits: Using The Right Word

"Silverlady"

If I confess that I graduated from high school fifty-one years ago, will anyone understand that I have trouble remembering all the rules of grammar and spelling that I learned back then?

I attended an all girl catholic high school and the good nuns made sure we learned English, grammar, sentence structure, spelling, and all those good things.  We diagrammed sentences and had spelling bees...anything to make sure we were knowledgeable. However, today I find myself totally in a fog about many of the things I knew long ago.

My mother’s favorite phrase was “look it up” and I remember saying the same thing to my children and grandchildren on numerous occasions. Today, I decided why not share the information from some of my trips to grammar references and other resources. Hopefully, these tidbits will refresh your memory and save you the time of “looking it up”. Breeze through it.  It'll be painless, I promise.

·         To or Too
Use the preposition “to” beginning a prepositional phrase.
Use “too” if you are saying also or referring to an extra or excessive amount.
“I ate too much cake at the party.”
“There were just too many cooks in the kitchen.”
“I’d love to pay fewer taxes, too.”
“I was too tired to cook dinner last night.”

·         Your or You’re
Your” is used when talking about something that belongs to someone.
You’re” is a contraction for you are.
“Is this your purse?”
“You’re going in the wrong direction.”

·         There or Their or They’re
“There” is used to describe a place.
“The books are on the top shelf over there.

“Their” is used to indicate possession.
My friends lost their plane tickets.

“They’re” is a contraction for they are.
They’re coming down the stairs now.

·         Farther or Further
“Farther” denotes physical distance.
My house is farther from school than yours.

“Further” relates to distance or depth. It is a time, degree or quantity.  It is another way of saying “additional”.
The board wanted to have further discussion on the issue.
If gas prices drop further before summer, we can take a road trip this summer.
I need to look further into your complaint before I make a decision.

·         Less or Fewer
Use “fewer” with countable, individual things.
I should drink fewer soft drinks.

Use “less” with uncountable amounts, volumes, etc.
I should drink less coffee.

Also use “less” when describing a quantity considered as a single bulk amount.
It happened less than five years ago.
He stole less than $1,000 from him.
The recipe calls for less than two cups of sugar.

I hope these grammar tidbits refresh your memory, save you time, and give you confidence in your ability to choose the proper wording.

Myths About Your Credit Score

When I saw the subject article on Yahoo! Finance, I was pleased to note that my EQ article “Take Control of Your Credit Rating ” covered these myths in detail. Take the quiz and see if you are armed with the necessary information.

Myth #1: Closing a card after paying off a massive debt load is a fine idea.
Myth #2: Your employment history impacts your score.
Myth #3: Financing a big purchase — like a new home or car — will lower your score.
Myth #4: The older you are, the higher your score.
Myth #5: Checking my score will lower my score.

Shame On You: "Righteous Rick" Santorum

I watched a clip from a Rick Santorum political meeting in Florida. One of the attendees had the floor and spoke to Rick Santorum about her belief that President Obama was not born in America (yes, that same birthier crap) and that she would not call him "president" since he legally didn't deserve the title. Santorum listened to her, smiling all the while. She wanted to know when someone was going to do something about "it". Rick said "I'm going to do something about it".

Hidden Gems - Volume III: Luther

In the 70's and 80's it was Billy Dee. In the 90's and the 2K's it was Denzel. As the sun sets on Mr. Washington's reign as "Mr. Grown And Sexy", there are only a few candidates capable of inheriting the throne. Judging by the response from the women in my family, one merely has to utter the name "Idris" and they begin to swoon like an extra from the "A Heart is a House for Love" concert scene from the 1991 urban classic - The Five Heartbeats. Which brings me to the topic at hand; the BBC TV crime drama, Luther.

Buying Life Insurance

It’s may be hard to think about buying life insurance while the economy is struggling, unemployment is high, and wages are stagnant. But, it’s worth taking time to investigate do you need insurance and what is the right life insurance for your family. While I’m no expert, I do hope to encourage you to think about it and want to give you some food for thought as you begin making a decision.

I remember back years ago, when my husband and I were just starting out. We had children, sacrificed to save money to buy a home, and worked at getting better jobs and increasing our salaries. We had little to no information about buying life insurance, but something told us we needed it. We had a friend who sold insurance and were blindly guided by his suggestions and recommendations. Looking back, I’m not sure we made the right decision, but we invested in a whole life insurance policy.

Beauty Wigs: Synthetic Wigs vs. Human Hair

Over the past few years, wigs have made a significant statement in fashion as well as style. Wigs can be used to cover thinning or balding hair from illness, and also be used for a style change or even a color change in hair.

Some of the things to consider when purchasing you wig is price, quality, and how you plan to use your wig.

Prices can vary greatly when purchasing wigs. Human hair wigs generally cost more than synthetic wigs. Human hair can generally be colored, perm, and heat treated. Most synthetic wigs cannot be chemically rearranged or heated with a flat or curling iron. Celebrity endorsed wigs also come with a greater price. When it comes to wigs, you basically get what you pay for.

Synthetic wigs are very easy to care for, in comparison to human hair wigs. A wig should be washed after it has been worn 10-12 times. Washing instructions will vary depending on if the hair is human or synthetic.

Use products designed for wigs to keep them looking natural and last longer. Also keep wigs on a mannequin head while not using. This will keep its shape and hold the style.

Just remember, it’s you choice whether you choose human or synthetic hair.  Just buy something that’s comfortable on your head and have fun!

The Warning Signs of Depression

Depression
We all have experienced times in our lives when we have felt sad, tearful, and just low. These are normal emotions of life, but if you find these feelings taking control and not easy up in frequency, you may be experiencing depression. Depression can make it difficult to function daily and enjoy a quality of life if left undiagnosed.

Learning about depression—including its signs, symptoms, causes, and treatment—is the first step to overcoming the problem. This article is to be used as a tool, not to diagnose depression. If you think you are suffering from a form of depression, contact your family physician.

The Face of the New Unemployed

Every day you hear politicians talking about the unemployment rate. They aren't doing anything about creating jobs, but they constantly talk about the high unemployment rate.

Many people think of the unemployed in terms of stereotypes-lazy, not motivated, irresponsible, unskilled, indifferent...you get the idea. Some think that if someone really wants a job, they could get one. Folks that are working hold their head up and feel just a little bit taller than those without a job. They spend their time shaking their heads about the jobless and remarking about people soaking up unemployment compensation in lieu of getting a job. They wonder why there are large numbers of African Americans without employment.

Take Control of Your Credit Rating

Are you one of the people that doesn’t understand how often decisions that affect your life are determined by your creditworthiness?

Most folks already know that lenders evaluate whether or not to extend you credit for purchases or loan you money for a home mortgages based on your credit scores.  You may know that your interest rates and terms of the credit or loan agreements depend on your credit history which is reflected in your score. Unfortunately, many people don’t know that your credit score affects many other things e.g., hiring decisions (whether or not you get the job or promotion) and leasing/rentals approval (whether or not you get the apartment).  Your credit score is the” silent director” in the play called “your life”. These reasons motivate us to keep our credit scores high or improve them when it’s needed.

Ten Home Remedies That Work

Americans spend billions of dollars for over-the-counter health remedies for everything from nighttime coughs to poison ivy. In many cases, there is no need to spend tons of money to find relief.  If you check your cupboard, you may find some surprising home remedies.

Here are some cheap, easy to find home remedies that really work:

On The Record - Michael Ealy

Underworld Awakening hit the screens today, but Kate Beckinsdale as vampire warrior Selene wasn't the talk of my crowd of friends and neither was the war between the Vampire and Lycan clans. Suave, clean cut actor Michael Ealy in the role of Detective Sebastian had tongues waging and hearts throbbing.

It was his steel gray eyes I remembered most, as I began to connect the dots from performance to performance. He was Ricky Nash in both "Barbershop" movies, terrorist Darwyn Al-Sayeed in the Showtime miniseries "Sleeper Cell" and the heart wrenching ex-soldier Beau Willie in Tyler Perry's ensemble drama "For Colored Girls". Don't let me forget that I saw him in the movie "Takers" and on TV's "The Good Wife". This handsome actor is working steadily and that's a blessing for him and his audiences.

Etta James - Rest in Peace

Over the past month, rumors of the death of singer Etta James abounded, closely followed by denials from the family. However, Etta James passed away on Friday, January 20, just a few days before her 74th birthday. Ms. James succumbed to leukemia, but she also suffered from Heptitis C and dementia. She died at a hospital in Riverside, California, with her husband Artis Mills and her sons by her side.

Hidden Gems - Volume II: Attack The Block

When I first heard the title "Attack The Block", I was convinced that some money hungry movie studio had manufactured yet another movie about a ragtag group of kids who use some unorthodox form of street dancing to escape the woes of the inner city. Since I'm getting too old to "Step Up 2: The Streets" or "Stomp The Yard", I didn't want to waste my time.

I thought to myself that I would just watch the movie trailer to see all the cool dance moves and spare myself from the "wrong side of the tracks" love story. I found the trailer online... Pressed Play... Mind Blown.

"Attack The Block" wasn't slang for street dancing. Attack The Block was a Hidden Gem - waiting to be discovered.

TV Faves Suited Up

October 13, 2011 was National Suit Up Day. Entertainment Weekly highlighted 22 actors for their fashion sense which made them tailor-made for the celebration. They included some of my TV faves. Here they are showcased and all suited up:

JON HAMM as Don Draper on Mad Men

Hamm's '60s ad man may have single-handedly revived an interest in the classic two-button suit with a look that men aspire to and women swoon over.

MATT BOMER as Neal Caffrey on White Collar

This con man/art thief may have plenty of substance to go along with his style, but it doesn't make his Dapper Dan act any harder on the eyes.

Living With Diabetes-Introduction:Paula Deen and Me

TV Chef Paula Deen

The buzz of the day is that TV Chef Paula Deen has type 2 diabetes. It seems that she has known about having the disease for about three years. Paula is known for her Southern cooking, full of butter, sugar, and other tasty ingredients high on the list of unhealthy foods.
No one is buzzing about it, but I’ve lived with type 2 diabetes for almost 25 years. My son Kreighton also lives with type 2 diabetes. Diabetes affects more than 20 million Americans and over 40 million Americans have pre-diabetes (early type 2 diabetes). So, Paula, welcome to the club.

You probably already know someone who has diabetes, either a family member, co-worker, or family friend. But, just so that we start on the same page, here’s a brief rundown on the basics of diabetes.
Diabetes is a chronic (lifelong) disease marked by high levels of sugar in the blood. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas to control blood sugar. Diabetes can be caused by too little insulin, resistance to insulin, or both.

Ethics Investigations: What Ever Happened??? Charles Rangel -Maxine Waters

The ethics investigation into Congressman Charles Rangel, Congress's former chief tax writer, began on July 2008.  Rangel was charged with 13 counts of ethics violations many dealing with personal finances.

After a “trial” by the Ethics panel last November — which Rangel walked out of in protest because he did not have an attorney — the New York Democrat was found guilty on 11 ethics violations, including charges that he had misused federal resources, failed to declare hundreds of thousands of dollars in income and assets on his annual financial statements and failed to pay income taxes on a Dominican Republic home, among others.

Surviving Breast Cancer

For the last 10 months I have been on a journey to survive breast cancer. My family and I were diagnosed with Stage II breast cancer in March 2010. I say my family and I because every trial, tribulation, and ordeal I have been through since that time, they have been through as well.

We were all in disbelief after the diagnosis. Care progressed quickly within the medical team I was assigned to. Breast cancer is not necessarily a “death sentence”. With early detection and depending upon the treatment, survival rates for Stage II breast cancer is 81-92%. It feels good to be able to say I am a “survivor”. Here are some tips to reduce your risk:

Don’t Smoke and Eat a Healthy Diet

While smoking has not been directly linked to breast cancer, it remains the leading cause of many other types of cancer and appears to be more harmful than most all other known carcinogens combined. The healthier you keep your body, the stronger your immune system and other vital functions will be in a fight against breast cancer. Likewise, eating a healthy diet – one low in saturated fats and simple sugars, high in fruits, vegetables and dietary fiber, and rich in vitamins and nutrients like anti-oxidants, will make your body less susceptible to disease.

Don’t Drink Alcohol, or At Least Be Conservative…

Alcohol consumption appears to have a well-documented link to increased risk for breast cancer. In a compilation of recent studies, it was shown that the equivalent of only two drinks a day increased a woman’s risk of breast cancer by 21%!

Exercise Regularly…

Scientists have recently discovered a link between a woman’s risk for breast cancer and regular exercise. While the scientific community is not yet fully aware of why regular physical activity reduces breast cancer risks, many believe it is due to exercise’s effect on hormones and overall well- being. The truth is, exercise benefits almost every system of the body. For your health, exercise regularly! (If you have not exercised vigorously for a year or more, you may wish to consult with a doctor prior to beginning any new routine.)

Get a mammogram!

(Especially for those over 30 or with a history of cancer in their family) Because there is no guaranteed way to prevent breast cancer, a regular mammogram is the best way to detect cancer at its earliest stages. Early detection through mammography screening can greatly improve a woman’s chances for successful treatment, treatment options, and ultimately increase survival. A mammogram can detect up to 90% of breast cancers where there were no other detectable signs or symptoms.

Prepare for Takeoff

Prepare for Takeoff
I recently had to fly to the Windy City and let me tell you... traveling can take a toll on your skin. Here are a few tips to keep your mug looking great!
1. Drink plenty of water. Hydration is the key to looking fabulous! You can’t take liquids through security, but you can bring an empty water bottle. Once you’ve cleared security, fill it at the water fountain. If you don’t care for the taste of fountain water, jazz it up with an on the go drink mix. I like the Great Value grape flavored drink mix at Walmart. You can also ask for water during your flight.
2. Keep skin looking rejuvenated. Pick up some samples at your local Sephora or makeup counter if you can. If you choose to bring your own, make sure it is in a 3 oz container so it doesn’t get snagged by TSA.
3. Eat healthy. Avoid those salty treats they provide on the plane. Sorry, that means no peanuts or pretzels. Sodium is bad for the organs and it makes your face look bloated. Instead pack some healthy treats in your carry-on luggage. Try bringing frozen grapes.
4. Limit the amount of makeup you wear. You are going to be stuck in a cabin for several hours. Give your skin a break. You can get cute when you get where you are going. If you must wear make-up, use a tinted moisturizer instead of a foundation. It's not as heavy and while give you a little coverage. Go for a bold lip to draw attention to your mouth. This way you don’t have to use a lot of eye makeup.
5. Pack some lip balm. Flying can dry out your skin. Protect your lips against cracking, peeling, and general dryness. I always keep Cherry flavored Chapstick on me. You want to make sure your lips are kissable if you have someone special meeting you at baggage claim ;-)

Do you have some skin rejuvenation travel tips? Let me know in the comment section!

Former Astronaut Mae Jemison To Lead Space Project

The astronaut who became the first black woman in space in 1992 has been chosen to skipper the '100 Year Starship' project. Dr. Mae Jemison is a medical doctor and a surgeon, with engineering experience. Dr. Jemison will lead the project to explore what it would take for a multi-generational mission beyond the solar system.

Dr. Jemison, 55, from Alabama, played a key role in setting up the 100 Year Starship symposium organized last year by NASA and the Pentagon's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency in Florida.

That led to the award by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency of a $500,000 contract to study what is neded for long term projects such as interstellar space missions, msnbc reports.

'Together we’ll be working towards an organization that will last 100 years and produce a viable interstellar technology, with benefits for all humankind.'

The Power of African-American Consumers

Businesses need to understand the demands of African American consumers, while these diverse consumers need to understand their purchasing power.
To address the growing needs of the diverse African-American consumer group, Nielsen and the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) have developed The State of the African-American Consumer Report.

Here are some of the key findings in the Nielsen report:
African-Americans are projected to spend $1.1 trillion annually by 2015. With a buying power of nearly $1 trillion annually, if African-Americans were a country, they’d be the 16th largest country in the world. Sixty-four per cent of African American women are in the U. S.  labor force.

DC Youth Killed For $200 Nike Sneakers

From NBC Washington:

David Robinson, a 19-year-old from Northwest DC was shot and killed Sunday. The cause of the incident, according to reports, was a $200 pair of Nike Rookie athletic shoes. Robinson was visiting a friend with a cousin in far Northeast DC when two men in an SUV pulled up, stole the shoes and shot Robinson.

Robinson was pronounced dead at Howard University Hospital. Hours later, at a previously scheduled church vigil against gun violence Sunday night, Mayor Vincent C. Gray (D) called the shooting “not only tragic” but “incredibly disquieting.”

“A life for a pair of Nike tennis shoes?” the mayor said. “Come on, ladies and gentlemen. It’s time for us to be able to end this kind of tragic violence in our society.”

People Get a Life-Stop Hating on Beyonce and Jay Z

You'd think that fans of Beyonce and/or jay Z would be happy about the birth of daughter Blue Ivy Carter.  Other who are not fans could and should be about other business that interests them. But, not so in today's world of hate, stupidity and malicious behavior.

If you thought it was just politicians who were ignorant with their "Birthier Theory" and "he's a Muslim" rhetoric about President Obama", or even that "George W. Bush was involved in the September 11th tragedy", you were sadly mistaken. Folks are going out of their way to create outrageous stories about the happy couple as they celebrate their daughter's birth.

Hattie Winston blazed the trail for actresses of color as the first Black woman to appear in a nationally televised commercial. In 1971, she had a role in "The Electric Company" as Valerie the Librarian.  As the 2011 Horizon Award Honoree, Ms. Winston's body of work in film, theatre and music has opened these fields of creativity to women of color.

Nick Cannon was hospitalized with kidney failure in Aspen, Colo., earlier this week and flew home to Los Angeles for treatment. Details of his ailment were not released; however, doctors say kidney failure can result from infections, diabetes, kidney stones and simple dehydration.

Nevada Presidential Caucus-January 21, 2012

"Hope is that thing inside us that insists, despite all the evidence to the contrary, that something better awaits us if we have the courage to reach for it and to work for it, and to fight for it."
Barack Obama

The Nevada Presidential Caucus is scheduled for January 21, 2012. Some voters maybe unfamiliar with the caucus process, particularly if you are accustomed to a primary with private voting as I was coming from Chicago. Here's a quick primer I'll call Caucus 101.

A caucus is a meeting of local Nevadans of a political party to show support and select delegates to a convention for candidates running for office. The caucus is the first step in Nevada's presidential nominating process and a simple gathering of neighbors to meet and discuss grassroots politics. Each political party is responsible for selecting its own presidential nominee. President Barack Obama will be the 2012 Democratic nominee.

Minorities Targeted in Beverage Marketing Campaigns

A new study conducted by Yale University suggests that soft drink and other sugary beverage manufacturers target their marketing campaigns to Latino and African-American children and teenagers.

A report released today from Yale's Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity said that children and teens were exposed to double the amount of television ads for full-calorie and sugary beverages from 2008 to 2010. The study also reported that black children and teens saw 80- to 90 percent more ads compared with whites, including more than twice as many ads for Sprite, Mountain Dew, 5-hour Energy, and Vitamin Water. Hispanic children saw 49 percent more ads for sugary drinks and energy drinks, with Hispanic preschoolers seeing more ads for Coca-Cola Classic, Kool-Aid, 7 Up and Sunny Delight than their older counterparts.

President Appoints Cordray to Head CFPB

President Obama in Shaker Heights, Ohio, with Richard Cordray, whom he appointed Wednesday to lead the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

Here's the story of the Senate's rejection of the President's nominee before the recess apointment:

The Senate rejected Richard Cordray, President Obama's nominee to head the newly formed Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). There was little mystery to the vote -- 44 Republicans pledged in May to block his nomination. The final tally was 53-45, with Republican Olympia Snowe of Maine voting "present." Sen. Scott Brown of Massachusetts, facing the bureau's inventor Elizabeth Warren, was the lone dissenting GOP vote.

Republicans don't like the agency, so they've fought to hamper it by refusing to approve any one as its Director. Once again, they've made new rules and confirm they'll do anything to protect the rich and stick it to the middle class.

LeBron James Engaged

According to the AP, Miami Heat forward LeBron James asked his high school sweetheart Savannah Brinson to marry him during a New Year's Eve party Saturday night. The party, hosted by Heat teammate Dwyane Wade and his girlfriend Gabrielle Union, was also a belated birthday celebration for James, who turned 27 on December 30. Heat star Chris Bosh and Queen Latifah were also on the guest list of 60 friends and family members.
"When it happens, it happens," Brinson, 25, told Harper's Bazaar of marriage in 2010. "If we do it, I want it to be forever.

The couple have two children: LeBron James Jr., 7 and Bryce Maximus James, age 4.

No wedding date was announced.

Check out Savannah's ringIn case you weren't aware, LeBron's salary will top $16 million this season.

On The Record: Idris Elba

British actor Idris Elba made his initial mark playing gangster Stringer Bell in “The Wire”, acclaimed as one of the best police shows America has ever produced. Elba loved portraying the cold-blooded character, but was glad to see him come to a bad end.

Idris was born in East London to African parents. His father was from Sierra Leone and his mother from Ghana. At the age of 14, he worked with his uncle, a DJ who played music at Sierra Leonean weddings and christenings. By 15, he was a DJ in his own right. In his early twenties he started trying out for parts on British television. After playing several supporting characters, he got a steady part on “Family Affairs” in 1997.

Michael Jordan Engaged

NBA legend Michael Jordan is reportedly engaged to longtime girlfriend and Cuban-born model Yvette Prieto. A spokeswoman confirmed the news that Jordan popped the question on Christmas Day. Prieto is 32 years old, while Jordan is 48. The couple has been dating for more than three years.

If you grew up in Chicago and faithfully followed the Chicago Bulls, you'll always love Michael Jordan. Folks have been heard saying "I want to be like Mike" as they remember the spectacular performances he gave his fans. He kept the championship rings and the big bucks, but the fans got to keep the thrills and excitment of every winning game. I can still hear the all of Chicago bragging on "Da Bulls" and its super star.

Jordan is the current owner of the Charlotte Bobcats, and can often be seen on the sideline of Bobcats games with Prieto. There is no announcement for a wedding date.

This would be Jordan's second marriage. He was married for 17 years to Juanita Jordan. The couple divorced in 2006 and settled for a reported amount of $168 million. They have two sons, Jeffrey Michael and Marcus James, and a daughter, Jasmine.

Who Jumped The Broom in 2011?

Without question, the biggest wedding of the year was the union England’s Prince William and Kate Middleton. But, don’t dismiss the lavish ceremonies of African American entertainers and sports stars during 2011.

Take a look at some of the most talked about weddings in our community last year:

Son Jeffrey walked Sherri Sheppard down the aisle during her wedding ceremony to TV writer Lamar Sally. The 5’1” bride wore 6 inch heels to wedge the height gap with the 6’6” groom. Why the world needed to know that the couple was celibate for 11 months before the wedding puzzles me, but such is the trappings of stardom.

Congress Gets Richer as Americans Lose Ground

The financial gap between Americans and their representatives in Congress has widened considerably, according to an analysis of financial disclosures by The Washington Post.

Between 1984 and 2009, the median net worth of a member of the House more than doubled, according to the analysis of financial disclosures, from $280,000 to $725,000 in inflation-adjusted 2009 dollars, excluding home equity.

Over the same period, the wealth of an American family has declined slightly, with the comparable median figure sliding from $20,600 to $20,500, according to the Panel Study of Income Dynamics from the University of Michigan.
