Minn Legislator's "Uncle Tom" Tweet

Shades of Paula Deen reflects itself in a MN Legislator's recent "Uncle Tom" tweet.

A Democratic legislator from Minnesota swiftly apologized Tuesday for a tweet he sent that referred to Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas as “Uncle Thomas” following a major ruling on the nation’s landmark voting rights law.

Thomas, who is black, was part of a 5-4 majority that invalidated part of the Voting Rights Act meant to deter racial discrimination in elections. The ruling makes it tougher for federal officials to prevent states and localities, primarily in the South, from adopting policies that add barriers to voting.

In response, state Rep. Ryan Winkler tweeted: “#SCOTUS VRA majority is four accomplices to race discrimination and one Uncle Thomas. Marriage decision may blur Court’s backsliding.”

“Uncle Tom” is a connotation to describe someone subservient to another and has its roots in Harriet Beecher Stowe’s pre-Civil War novel about slavery, “Uncle Tom’s Cabin.” The latter part of the tweet refers to the high court’s expected decision on gay marriage.

Winkler, who is white, deleted the tweet and told followers in his feed that he didn’t understand the phrase to be a racist term. He later told The Associated Press that he was trying to make a point about institutional racism resulting from the ruling.

“I used a term that was too hot for the issue, but I didn’t intend for it to be derogatory,” said Winkler, who holds a history degree from Harvard.

Chris Fields, secretary of the Minnesota Republican Party, said Winkler’s comments were “beyond the pale” and his apology wasn’t enough. “If he had any personal integrity, he’d resign,” said Fields, who is black.

Winkler, of Golden Valley, had been weighing a run for Minnesota secretary of state, whose office oversees elections. He said he ruled that out several days ago but hadn’t announced it.

The four-term lawmaker represents a district that covers western Minneapolis suburbs and is an attorney. He is known for rhetorical clashes with Republicans while on the House floor and on Twitter.

It should be noted that Justice Clarence Thomas did something at a Supreme Court argument Monday for the first time in nearly seven years — he spoke. Thomas hasn’t asked a question in court since February 22, 2006.

Celebrity Chefs Roll in the Dough

While attention focused on Paula Deen's troubles, many folks were surprised at the large incomes of "Celebrity Chefs". Forbes most recent ranking includes Deen Among the top ten earners. She was number four on their list, coming in with a cool $17 million dollars. Take a look at some of the others, some surprising and some not.

Gordon Ramsay tops the list of Celebrity Chefs with earning of $38 million dollars. Most Americans know Ramsay as the fire-breathing host of Hell's Kitchen and Master Chef, but he is also known world wide for his famous restaurants. Since restaurant margins are notoriously thin, Ramsay is expanding his TV empire with a new show, Hell Hotel, where he helps struggling small business owners.

Meet Nigella Lawson: Britain's Celebrity "Chef"

Renowned for her flirtatious manner of presenting, Nigella Lawson has been called the "queen of food porn". She is neither a trained chef nor cook, and has assumed a distinctly relaxed approach to her cooking.

Disturbing photographs surfaced of the British television star and celebrity chef  with what appears to be her husband, art and advertising magnate Charles Saatchi, clenching her throat in public. In the pictures, his hand is at her throat as she appears to be stunned by his grasp. In another picture, the man is grabbing at Lawson's nose as she shuts her eyes.

Paul Deen and Me: A Love Affair Gone Wrong

The Food Network Queen and popular restaurant owner Paula Deen is involved in a harassment lawsuit filed last year by Lisa Jackson, a former manager of Uncle Bubba's Seafood and Oyster House in Savannah, GA. The restaurant is owned by Deen and her brother Bubba Hiers.

Jackson, who is white, was hired at the restaurant in February 2005 and within months was promoted to general manager. Jackson said in the lawsuit that she was sexually harassed and subjected to work in a hostile work environment. She also said in the lawsuit that Hiers routinely made inappropriate sexual and racial remarks and that she heard both Hiers and Deen use racial slurs.  Jackson said her doctor encouraged her to quit her post at because she suffered from panic attacks and other stress.

The "Border Surge": Don't Fence Me In

The Republican Party is in a pickle about immigration.  They know that they can't stand in the way of comprehensive immigration reform if they are ever to woo minority voters. However, they also know that if they support a reform bill, the GOP base will make them pay at the polls. The big question is what to do to appease both sides. Enter an agreement to beef up border security, better known as the "Border Surge". I knew something was wrong when I heard that the agreement was favored by the likes of Bill O'Reilly.

Stuck on Stupid: Congressman Michael Burgess (R-TX)

The Republican led House of Representatives can pass a bill, believe it or not. House Speaker John Boehner said that "jobs is the number one concern". Yet, I'm still waiting to see the Republicans propose or pass a jobs bill. In their most recent sessions, they have passed numerous bills to repeal Obamacare and recently passed H R 1797, The Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act sponsored by AZ Republican Congressman Trent Franks. The Bill outlaws abortion after 20 weeks, in violation of the provisions of Roe v. Wade, the law of the land.

Stuck on Stupid: Congressman Jeff Duncan (R-SC)

There are serious issues that need Congressional action-unemployment, immigration, gun violence, national security, equal pay for women and others. Somehow the Republican Party can't focus on improving the lives of the American people. Sadly, the GOP won't take on these problems, but they continue to take 40 useless votes to repeal Obamacare, introduce legislation to challenge Roe v. Wade, and even to still dabble in Birtherism.

House Republicans Pass Far-Reaching Anti-Abortion Legislation

House Republicans on Tuesday make their most concerted effort of the year to change federal abortion law with legislation that would ban almost all abortions after a fetus reaches the age of 20 weeks.

The “Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act,” expected to pass by a comfortable margin late Tuesday, would be a direct challenge to the 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision that legalized abortions up to the time a fetus becomes viable. Fetal viability is generally considered to be at least 24 weeks into the pregnancy.

Small Steps Payoff Big-Financial Planning

The financial picture is murky and uncertain. After the massive Wall Street bailout and the crash of the housing market, consumers are struggling to find their way. When you look at the massive amounts required for a secure retirement and the huge mortgage, you're barely chipping away at it each month. Financial planning continues to be the "elephant in the room". Stop looking at the "big picture"-it's scary and bleak. Financial Advisor Suze Orman says start focusing on the small steps you can manage today that will help you prepare for tomorrow's uncertain future. Taking tiny steps today is your key to financial planning. Here are some small moves that yield big dividends:

Reality TV: "Does Someone Have To Go"

First let me say that I'm not a fan of reality television. The few shows I've watched are a study in personal interactions designed for sadist voyeurs who feed on ridicule, caustic behavior, and individual pain. That being said, my point is clearly illustrated in a new show "Does Someone Have To Go", a classic example of why I have such disdain for reality tv.

Sarah Hepola, Bloomberg Business Week offers a quick synopsis of the first three episodes:

Velocity Merchant Services, a credit card processing company (is) owned by a woman named Dema who somehow decided it would be smart to hire several family members for key positions, shame her teammates for their (not clearly articulated) failures, inflame them with a battery of “who sucks the most” exercises, and film all of this for public enjoyment.

E. W. Jackson Fans the Fires in VA Race

E. Earl Walker Jackson, Sr. is an American politician, Christian minister and lawyer in Virginia. On May 18, 2013, he was nominated as the Republican Party candidate for Lieutenant Governor of Virginia.

His thoughtless comments about abortion, homosexuality and the Democratic party as well as his ridiculous positions i.e., comparing Planned Parenthood to the Ku Klux Klan and referred to gays in the military as “sexually twisted” have generated controversy ever since he began to receive national attention as his party’s nominee for that position.  He's in the process of walking back his most recent blunder, claiming that practicing yoga could lead to Satanism.

Clueless Rep. Trent Franks Proposes New Abortion Law

In case you thought Republicans were going to give the War on Women a break, what with their scandal-mongering and lessened work days, Rep. Trent Franks (R-AZ) set the record straight when he claimed at a hearing Wednesday, “The incidents of rape resulting in pregnancy are very low.”

Of course, Franks had an agenda in pretending ignorance about rape, as he was objecting to a Democratic amendment to make an exception to Franks’ bill to nationally ban all abortions after the 20 week mark. His bill was advanced from an all-male panel, naturally. Franks’ “Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act” is unconstitutional, and allows no exceptions for rape and/or incest victims. Somehow Republicans sell this as being “family values”.

America's Doctor Steps Down

U.S. Surgeon General Regina Benjamin announced late Wednesday that she will step down next month after four years in the post.

As surgeon general, she promoted disease prevention, smoking cessation and healthy lifestyles, particularly among minorities. Benjamin oversaw a report that documented how smoking, even an occasional cigarette or secondhand smoke, can cause immediate damage to the human body.

Jared Fogle: Turned Weight Loss into Millions

Today was not a good day.  When I weighed in at Weight Watchers, I had gained four pounds in one week. Oddly enough, I took it in stride, refusing to be completely devastated by my poor choices.  I sent my husband and children a text sharing my weekly results, shook myself mentally, and went back to work on making healthier food choices and controlling my portions.

While surfing the Internet, I bumped into a familiar face, my friend from Subway, Jared Fogle. It must be a message sent to help me get back on track. Everybody knows Jared. He's been a spokesman for Subway for 15 years. Subway's Executive Chef Gina Pace says Jared is like one of the family. The company says Jared is responsible for one third to one half of Subway's growth in the past 15 years. His current estimated net worth is $15 million.

Jared says it was a win-win relationship. “I owe a lot to Subway,” he said, but declined to put a dollar amount on the deal. “They’ve given me an amazing life in multiple ways.”

Estate Planning Basics

A good estate plan helps protects your family and your property when you die or become incapacitated. Planning your estate generally includes: deciding who will get your things when you die, naming an executor to wrap up your affairs, naming guardians for your children and their property, avoiding probate, or preparing for a time when you may not be able to make your own financial or medical decisions.
To accomplish these goals, you may need a will, living trust, a living will, and powers of attorney. You probably won’t need all of these documents, and you may be able to make some or all of them yourself, without a lawyer. There is software available that can take care of all of these for you.

Why Create A Living Trust?

A living trust is an important part of your estate plan. Making a living trust takes a more work than writing a will because a living trust requires that you take the additional step of transferring property into the trust. But like wills, living trusts are simple documents that do not require a lawyer’s blessing. Most people can create a living trust without an attorney using software or an online service.
The main reason to set up a living trust is to avoid probate. Probate is the process that courts use to distribute a deceased person’s property. Most people don’t need or want their estate to go through probate because it’s expensive and time consuming. Property that passes through a living trust does not have to go through probate. Instead, the person named in the trust to be the trustee distributes the deceased person’s property without court oversight. For many people with simple estates, this is far better than paying the court thousands of dollars and waiting months or years for the court to make the same distributions.

Creating A Living Will: A Healthcare Directive

A living will is a legal document that a person uses to make known his or her wishes regarding life prolonging medical treatments. It can also be referred to as an advance directive, health care directive, or a physician's directive. A living will should not be confused with a living trust, which is a mechanism for holding and distributing a person's assets to avoid probate. It is important to have a living will as it informs your health care providers and your family about your desires for medical treatment in the event you are not able to speak for yourself.
Generally, a living will describes certain life prolonging treatments. You, the declarant, indicate which treatments you do or do not want applied to you in the event you either suffer from a terminal illness or are in a permanent vegetative state. A living will does not become effective unless you are incapacitated; until then you'll be able to say what treatments you do or don't want.

Women Beware of the State of Mississippi

Michelle Goldberg follows information relating to women's reproductive rights. I've seen her on T.V. panels and read her work in the Daily Beast. in a recent article she elaborated on the fate of women in the State of Mississippi.

While Mississippi may be proud of its infamous history of fighting against civil rights for African-Americans, women should take a look at the results of the state's policies that adversely impact children and women. In a recent poll, Mississippi is ranked as the worst state for women.

Stonewall Riots: A Spark for Gay Liberation

Each February, the United States celebrates Black History Month. For many Americans, this celebration consists of watching the public service announcements telling us of the achievements of African Americans. From these ads, we’ve learned that a black man invented the stoplight and that the first female self-made millionaire in the US was black. Indeed, the month-long celebration provides the public with lessons of the vast contributions blacks Americans have made to this country.

The Fight is On: President Obama Struggles to Fill Judicial Vacancies

Not long ago, the Republicans announced their most important goal-stop Obama from winning a second term as President. To that end, nothing was more important to the G.O.P. They forgot about the economy, put no effort in reducing unemployment, and just said no to anything and everything the President tried to accomplish.

When the President stunned Mitt Romney and his crew by winning the 2012 Presidential Election, the Republicans decided to continue to say no...any way and every way they could. One of their key strategies is slow walking the Senate's advise and consent responsibility and failing to make decisions on the President's nominations for his administration and federal judgeship vacancies.

Republican senators have blocked President Obama's nominations slated to head the Environmental Protection Agency (Gina McCarthy), Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (Richard Cordray), Securities and Exchange Commission (Mary Jo White), and Labor Department (Thomas Perez). In the case of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, 43 Republicans (all but 2 of the total Republicans in the Senate) are opposed to approving anyone to head the Bureau. They don't want the Bureau to function or exist, so they are refusing to confirm the President's nominee, Richard Cordray. Elizabeth Warren was frozen out of consideration for the seat as head of the agency she helped create and consequently ran for Senator in Masschuettes, defeating incumbent GOP Senator Scott Brown.

There are 24 Obama nominees to Federal judgeships pending Senate confirmation. Now, the U. S. Court of Appeals, D. C. Circuit (aka the D.C. Circuit) judicial vacancies are at the center of a struggle between Obama and Senate Republicans.

Issuing a forceful challenge to Senate Republicans, President Barack Obama nominated three judges to the influential federal appeals court in Washington, declaring that the GOP has “cynically used Senate rules and procedures” to delay and block past nominees.

“What I’m doing today is my job; I need the Senate to do its job,” he said as he announced his nomination of Patricia Ann Millett, Cornelia Pillard and Robert Leon Wilkins on Tuesday in the White House Rose Garden.

In simultaneously naming three nominees to the understaffed federal appeals court in Washington, Obama set up an aggressive push against Senate Republicans who are trying to keep him from naming any more judges to the influential circuit.

Just take a look at judicial appointments under past presidents: Carter (262), Regan (384),G. H. W. Bush (194- one term), Clinton (379) and G. W. Bush (328). President has been able to appoint only 172 during his term in office and Republicans continue to obstruct his ablity to do his job and name his team. Republican have even introduced the Court Efficiency Act which would eliminate the 3 vacancies in the D. C.  Circuit Court, the second highest court in the land and the natural feeder court to fill vacancies in the Supreme Court. Even the New York Times supports retaining the 11 seats for this key court.

While the Republicans are working diligently to deny President Obama a lasting legacy, they are also letting the country's business go astray and are forgetting the needs of the American people in the process. They are saying forget the results of the election and the public's clear choice of Barack Obama to lead the country. For them, it's their way or no way and damn whether the country can progress. They just say "no".
