The Case of NV Rancher Cliven Bundy

Cliven Bundy
Militia men, Waco and Ruby Ridge, Government Overreach, Individual Freedom-all these topics are swirling in the media since 60-something NV rancher Cliven Bundy challenged the federal government. Libertarians, extreme conservatives and anti-government campaigners think Bundy is an American hero and view him as fighting government oppression and winning against it.

Survey Reveals Black Family Concerns Regarding Race, Money,
Education and the Economy

CHICAGO (April 1, 2014) — In the May issue of EBONY magazine, the publication partnered with the W.K. Kellogg Foundation (WKKF) to release the State of the Black Family Survey. In the study, a national sample of 1,005 African-American respondents identified job loss and financial insecurity as the number one issue confronting Black families. The survey polled African-Americans on their views on the economy, education, relationships, race relations, health care, employment, finances and media trends.

Relabel America: No Longer a "Democracy"

A new scientific study from Princeton researchers Martin Gilens and Benjamin I. Page has finally put some science behind the recently popular argument that the United States isn't a democracy any more. And they've found that in fact, America is basically an oligarchy.

An oligarchy is a system where power is effectively wielded by a small number of individuals defined by their status called oligarchs. Members of the oligarchy are the rich, the well connected and the politically powerful, as well as particularly well placed individuals in institutions like banking and finance or the military.

“Gatekeepers of Beauty” Go Global

I’m sure you’ve heard that old adage “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder”. The media has long supported narrow parameters to define classic beauty traits, but something is changing. As world demographics expand a mix of cultures, people are no longer satisfied with old standards and are demanding a diversity that mirrors their everyday experiences. Beauty brands are increasingly recruiting minority women to serve as the new face of their cosmetic lines.

Karyn Washington of ForBrownGirls, Dead at 22

Karyn Washington, creator of "For Brown Girls" and "Dark Skin, Red Lips", is dead at the tender young age of 22. Her death is an apparent suicide.

Black women have long been acclaimed for carrying an overwhelming burden, while being denigrated, ridiculed and oppressed. They are seen as less desirable than other women and they most often live a life of continuous struggle. Karyn was dedicated to uplifting dark-skinned black girls and women, firmly committed to giving them a sense of well being. Yet, she struggled with depression and mental illness.

Karyn’s haunting words from ForBrownGirls.com are heartbreaking, as her vision has always been to empower…

“As humans, regardless of color, age, socio-economic status, gender, and other characteristics, we MUST build each other up rather than tear each other down in order to change the world and create a better place for our children and future generations. As women, it is imperative as well as our duty to love ourselves unconditionally, smile and laugh often, and NEVER allow ANYONE to steal our joy.”

May "ForBrownGirls", her legacy, continue to thrive and may the ideals that she fostered about mutual support and self love strengthen those who loved her and those who come behind her. Know that it's no sin or shame to be vulnerable, to feel like buckling under life's pressures, and to need help.
Learn from Karyn's life to ask for friendship, love and a supportive hand. Karyn said "don't give up on your dreams".

Rest in Peace, Karyn.

Show Me the Money: Top Paid Athletes in 2014

Floyd Mayweather, Jr.

When ESPN released its list of the 25 Top Paid Athletes on April 14, 2014, sports fans were in for a few surprises.  No one should have dropped a jaw when they saw Boxer Floyd Mayweather, Jr. leading the pack with earnings of $73.5 million. He led Sports Illustrated high earnings listing in 2012 and 2013. Currently undefeated as a professional, he is a five-division world champion, having won eight world titles and the lineal championship in three different weight classes.

Cristiano Ronaldo

I guess fans kept track of Soccer Star Cristiano Ronaldo, who followed in the number 2 spot with earnings of $50.2 million. Ronaldo, a Portuguese footballer, plays as a forward for Spanish club Real Madrid and captains the Portugal national team.

Lionel Messi
Lionel Andrés Messi (#3) earning $50.1 million, is an Argentine footballer who plays as a forward for Spanish club FC Barcelona and the Argentina national team. He serves as the captain of his country's national football team.

The NFL was well represented with Green Bay Packer Quarterback Aaron Rogers (#4) earning $40 million, Detroit Loins QB Matthew Stafford (#6) with $31.5 million, and New England QB Tom Brady (#7) at $31 million. Tied for the number nine position with $30 million each are Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan and Baltimore Ravens QB Joe Flacco. Look for Tony Romo at #14 with $26.5 million in earnings and Denver Broncos Quarterback Peyton Manning at # 16 earning $ 25 million, tying with Detroit Lions Wide Receiver Calvin Johnson.

Zack Greinke
LA Lakers Star Guard Kobe Bryant ranked # 8 with $30.5 million in earnings. Hard to believe Miami Heat Mega Star LeBron James earnings at $19.1 million. Topping the Major league Baseball earnings list were (#1) Zack Greinke-LA Dodgers at $28 million ; (#2) Ryan Howard and Cliff Lee-Philadelphia Phillies at $24 million each; and rounding out the top five in MLB tying for #3 were Robinson Cano,Seattle Mariners and Prince Fields, Texas Rangers.

It's just like Cub Godding Jr said in the movie Jerry McGuire..."Show Me The Money"!

SCOTUS Strikes Another Blow

Chief Justice Roberts
The Supreme Court on Tuesday morning struck down a 40-year-old ban on aggregate contributions that a single donor can give to candidates and party committees. In short, the court's ruling means that a single contributor is no longer capped on how many candidates and party committees he/she can give to in a given election cycle. It keeps in place the federal campaign limits that restrict how much a donor can give to any one candidate or to any one party committee.

What does this decision mean?

For the sixth time the Roberts' Court poked holes in legislation designed to stem the flow of money into the election system. The decision says handing a suitcase of money to a member of Congress and getting an explicit agreement to do something isn't allowed. The movie American Hustle is an example of this. Roberts says trying to use your money to get influence with members of Congress is at the heart of the First Amendment. In other words, spending and contributions are a form of expression protected by the First Amendment. The only limiting principle is "when money buys a specific favor from a particular politician".

When you finish reading all the articles on this decision, in my opinion, it'll all boils down to the following:
The Rich not only have a "voice", but their wealth allows them to have a louder voice than the common man. The Rich have even more power to influence election outcomes. End of story.
