Golden-Career Favorites: 50 Years on the Job



Can you satisfy five generations as you serve the public, 50 years on the job and counting? AARP identified some in the 50-Year Career Club. Let's take a look.



The Rolling Stones
Rock Legends

On the job since 1962, they signed with Decca Records in 1963. The Stones could be the world's greatest rock band with 92 singles, 29 studio albums and 10 live albums.

With seven Grammy nominations, two Grammy awards, a Grammy and a MTV Lifetime Achievement Award, entering the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame- all of these are just a sampling of the recognition afforded the Rolling Stones. When they won the World Music Award in 2005, they summed up the status of the group as "the world's greatest touring band".


Ruth Bader Ginsburg
Associate Supreme Court Justice

On the job since 1959, her first big job was the second female faculty member of Rutgers University Law School, 1963. Ginsburg was appointed by President Bill Clinton and took the oath of office on August 10, 1993. She was the 107th Supreme Court Justice. Ginsburg administered, at his request, Vice President Al Gore's oath of office to a second term during the second presidential inauguration of Clinton on January 20, 1997.

Ginsburg was diagnosed with colon cancer in 1999 and underwent surgery followed by chemotherapy and radiation therapy. During the process, she did not miss a day on the bench. On February 5, 2009, she again underwent surgery related to pancreatic cancer. Ginsburg's tumor was discovered at an early stage. Ginsburg was released from a New York hospital, eight days after the surgery and heard oral arguments again four days later.

With the retirement of John Paul Stevens in 2010, Ginsburg became, at 77 years of age, the eldest justice on the Court.



Queen Elizabeth II

On the job since 1952, she  followed her father King George VI who took the the throne when his brother Edward VIII abdicated. She became a queen at the age of 25, with the first televised coronation. Queen Elizabeth II is the constitutional monarch of 16 sovereign states and their territories and dependencies, as well as head of the 54-member Commonwealth of Nations.


Maya Angelou
Author, Poet

Writing since 1958 when she joined the Harlem Writers Guild. You may know her best by her book I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and her poem "Still I Rise". She is the only poet to read at two presidents' inaugurations (Clinton and Obama).  She has published six autobiographies, five books of essays, several books of poetry, and is credited with a list of plays, movies, and television shows spanning more than fifty years.



Warren Buffet
Business Magnate

On the job since 1943, he delivered newspapers at the age of 13 and sold his own horseracing tip sheet, claiming his bike as a $35 tax deduction. Known as the world's third-richest man. He plans to leave his $44 billion to charity.


There are many others with 50 years on the job.  Let's celebrate their contributions and stand up to follow their lead.
