Loyal fans anxiously await the return of Shonda Rimes' award winning political thriller "Scandal". If you haven't been watching, now is a good time to catch up on the series.
We all know and love Kerry Washington as political fixer Olivia Pope and her crisis management team. Columbus Short (Harrison Wright), the loyal lawyer who was himself rescued by Olivia, calls the team "gladiators in suits". Abby Whealan (Darby Stanchfield) works as an investigator in the firm and Quinn Perkins (Katie Lowes), also a lawyer, is the junior staffer, getting her feet wet and hiding a secret. Ex- Marine Huck (Guillermo Diaz) is the tech expert with a dark CIA past.
So, what's a "Beltway potboiler" without ties to the Oval Office. Tony Goldwyn leads the White House as President Fitzgerald Thomas Grant III, aka Fitz. First Lady Mellie Grant (Bellamy Young) is strong, cold, and calculating, willing to do anything to stay in the White House. Cyrus Rutherford Beene (Jeff Perry), White House Chief of Staff is loyal to Fitz and has no boundaries when it comes to protecting the President. He is married to journalist James Novak. The Vice-President, a Supreme Court Justice, and prominent members of the Congressional Leadership are featured in the series, showcasing typical Beltway intrigue.
During season 2, we meet Jake Ballard (Scott Foley), a naval officer who spies on Olivia for President Grant. During the end of episode 17 "Snake in the Garden", we are presented with the "Mysterious Man" who meets with Jake on the park bench at the park. these clandestine exchanges continue through the end of the season with meetings on the bench at various times, day and night. In episode 21 "Any Questions", Mystery Man" meets with Cyrus Beene, WH Chief of Staff. Appetites whet, viewers wanted to know who is the Mystery Man and how does he fit into the story line.
"Mystery Man" (portrayed by Joe Morton) is Jake Ballard's commanding officer for some kind of covert operation, possibly a rogue or unsanctioned branch of the CIA. he appears to have been involved in heading the B613 program. He was know to Huck of Olivia's staff and to Charlie who secretly operates for Cyrus Beene. In the May 16 finale, Mystery Man and Olivia come face to face.
Did I hear Olivia call Mystery Man "Dad"?
We'll see what the future hold for all our faves at "Scandal" when season 3 begins in the Fall.
