On the Record: Meet Atty General Eric Holder Part 2

Eric Holder will announce today that he will step down from his position as law enforcer in chief.
If you missed my post introducing Attorney General Eric Holder, you missed the short, sweet information on his life, career, and personal background. As promised, here's Eric Holder Part 2, which become a farewell to the nation's Top Cop.

Eric Holder, 82nd Attorney General, believes in hope and change. He entered the position to reinvent it, committed to purging the USDOJ's image after the dubious Bush era appointees.

As usual, right wing conservatives bash this Attorney General at every opportunity., Writing for the conservative media Red State,  Candice Lanier outlines "16 Scandals: The Legacy of Eric Holder", charging him with"Hostility toward Conservatives", "Opposition to Voter ID Laws", Opposition to Second Amendment Rights",  "Opposition to Arizona Immigration Law", "Operation Fast and Furious", "Treatment of Terrorists as Criminal Defendants Instead of Enemy Combatants"  and more.  Washington Post opinion writer David Ignatius charges Holder with "being a mediocre Attorney General" unlike Bobby Kennedy whom he calls "heroic". Sen.Ted Cruz (R-TX) called for Holder's impeachment "over a non-scandal in an agency that Holder doesn't run". The National Review calls for Holder's impeachment, not Obama's.

I left this research thinking, "well, Holder must be doing something right".

Under Holder's leadership, the Justice Department saw "historic gains in the areas of criminal justice reform and civil rights enforcement," particularly on the issues of gay rights, sentencing reform and voting rights, and in the future, the DOJ is expected to impose new curbs on racial profiling in law enforcement, a department official told ABC News.

In a recent interview with ABC News' Pierre Thomas, Holder described his time leading the Justice Department as "demanding" but "the honor of my professional life," serving the American people.
Among his other "key accomplishments," according to the Justice Department, are his declining to defend the Defense of Marriage Act, which barred the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages, and extending federal benefits to same-sex couples. The department also says Holder has been "vindicate[d]" over the use of federal civilian court to prosecute terrorism suspects, and Holder recently said that if 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Muhammad and his co-conspirators had been prosecuted in Manhattan -- as he originally planned -- they would already have been convicted and sentenced.

In light of the recent unrest in Ferguson, Mo., after he officially steps down Holder wants "to continue helping to restore trust between law enforcement and minority communities," the Justice Department said. "As a career prosecutor with strong relationships with law enforcement, as well as the first African-American Attorney General who retains deep ties to leading civil rights organizations, Holder was uniquely positioned to help lead such a project.
The New York Observer reported on Attorney General Eric Holder remarks to a crowd at New York University that the nation has a “critical opportunity” to change its approach to policing in the wake of Michael Brown’s death and the protests that followed in Ferguson, Missouri. In a recent interview with Katie Couric, Holder commented on terrorism, race in America and other items that you might find interesting.

Personally I wish the "Top Cop" the best for himself and his family. The nation will miss his leadership and candor, but I suspect he will continue to make a contribution no matter where his career takes him, even to the bench of the Superme Court..
