Is your bathroom straining at its hinges? Does your makeup bag runneth over? It may be time for a reduction strategy by paring down to the essentials. Beauty experts offer a list of beauty products every woman should have. It's a sure fire way to cut back on beauty clutter.
MOISTURIZER WITH RETINOL
For nighttime, dermatologists recommend a moisturizer with retinol, the gold standard antiaging ingredient. Apply it before going to bed to reduce fine lines and even out discoloration.
CONCEALER
The right formula will hide undereye circles as well as blemishes and dark spots. Concealers that come in sticks are usually a good choice-creamy enough to blend under eyes, but dry enough to keep a pimple under wraps all day. Look for a shade that matches your skin tone as closely as possible. If you go a shade lighter, it will work well under your eyes but could accentuate a blemish.
Great Bargain: CoverGirl Smoothers Concealer at drugstores for about $6.50
LIP BALM
Your lips require a waxy balm to stay hydrated because they have a dry keratin layer on their surface. A balm that contains shea butter seals in moisture effectively.
Great Bargain: Burt's Bees medicated Lip Balm at drugstores for about $4; Yes to Carrots C Me Smile Lip Butter at Walgreen's for about $4.
MASCARA
Two coats leave your eyes looking larger and your face more "finished". "Volumizing formulas give you the most bang for your buck because they make lashes appear not just longer, but also thicker" says Mally Roncal. (I love Mally beauty products which I get from QVC and her mascara is a little pricey but well worth the cost.)
Great Bargain: Rimmel Max Volume Flash Mascara at drugstores for about $7; Maybelline's line of Volumizing mascara at drugstores for about $6.
MOISTURIZER WITH SUNSCREEN
I'm ashamed to say that I only think about moisturizer with sunscreen when I go on vacation...and I live in Las Vegas. Use this product every single day, rain or shine. For extra protection against free-radical damage, look for a daily moisturizer that also has antioxidants (like vitamin C and E).
Great Bargain: Aveeno positively Ageless + Antioxidants SPF 42 at drugstores for about $20.
BODY MOISTURIZER
Look for a good full-service choice that contains the excellent not-too-heavy humectant glycerin. Experts tell us to apply the product when your skin is still damp from the shower.
Great Bargain: Eucerin Daily Skin Balance Skin-Fortifying Body Lotion at drugstores for about $10; Nivea Happy Sensation Body Lotion at drugstores for about $6.
LIP COLOR
Most women have tubes and tube of lip color products, many of which go unused after the first application. You really only need two options, a neutral pink or bronze gloss for day and a deeper red, wine or mauve to dress up for night.
Great Bargains: Maybelline New York Shine Sensational Lip Gloss in Cherry Bloom at drugstores for about $6; Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Lipstick in Stay Cranberry for about $22 on line at esteelauder.com.
BLUSH
Rosy cheeks suggest robust health, a quality that everyone finds attractive. A cream blush is an easy way to fake it that won't settle into fine lines and gives a natural sheen.
Great Bargains: Revlon Cream Blush at drugstores for about $10.
EYELASH CURLER
I have to admit having a life-long prejudice against this product. Don't ask my why because i can't give you a good reason. however, beauty experts recommend it as a essential beauty tool. Turning up the lashes makes them look longer and lets more light hit the eyes, so that your irises have more sparkle. Who knew?
There are a ton of beauty products...the list goes on and on. The price of looking good can be costly if you fall into the traps that companies lay out for you that cause you to dig deep into your pockets for their products. My advice is to stick with the basics and let your natural beauty shine.
