Despite the media bias against women who aren't 18-28, I've heard many men say there's something especially desirable about a mature woman. "Beauty never dies" said one and another said "they are like fine wine". It started me thinking about beautiful women of color over 40, or 50, even over 60. I never ran out of names for my list, so take a look at some the hottest mature women on the planet:
Born Carol Diann Johnson, July 17, 1935, in New York, NY, her fabulous career spans five decades. From her debut in 1954 until present roles on Grey's Anatomy and White Collar, she's the girl from the Bronx who romanced Sir David Frost and Sidney Poitier and found worldwide fame as Dynasty's sultry singer. Four husbands later and she's still going strong.
Pam Grier still has "Foxy Brown" looks at age 62. She's a cultural icon and a cancer survivor. Although she has many happy childhood memories, there is one memory she wishes she could forget. When Pam was 6 years old, she says she was sexually abused by a group of older children who were babysitting her. Pam says she went from being a curious, outgoing child to an introvert. "I just seemed like I lost something," she says. Almost three decades ago, Beverly Johnson (59) was the first black model to appear on the cover of American Vogue in August 1974. Johnson's appearance on the cover changed the beauty ideal in fashion and by 1975, every major American fashion designer began using African American models.
A
year later, she became the first black woman to appear on the cover of the
French edition of Elle magazine. She is
currently the star of the reality series Beverly's
Full House on the Oprah Winfrey Network which focuses on her attempt
to heal the flawed mother/daughter relationship with daughter, Anansa Sims, who
is a plus size model.
Johnson
was honored in 2006 at OprahWinfrey's Legends Ball along with Coretta Scott
King, Rosa Parks, Tina Turner and other female African Americans
in entertainment, civil rights, and the arts. The New York Times named Johnson one
of the 20th century's most influential people in fashion.
Born in
1955 in Somalia, Iman (Abdulmajid) is a fashion
model, actress, and entrepreneur. Her father was a diplomat
and a former Somali ambassador to Saudi Arabia and her mother was a gynecologist.
She studied political science at University of Nairobi and is fluent in
five languages: Somali, Arabic, Italian,
French and English.
Her
first modeling assignment was for Vogue
a year later in 1976. She soon landed some of the most prestigious magazine
covers, establishing herself as a supermodel. After almost two decades of
modeling, Iman started her own cosmetics firm in 1994, focusing on
difficult-to-find shades for ethnic women. As of 2010, Iman Cosmetics is a
$25-million-a-year business. In
2007, she started a clothing design line on Home Shopping Network (HSN). Today,
Iman's Global Chic collection is one of four best-selling items among more than
200 fashion and jewelry brands on HSN.
On
June 7, 2010, she received a Fashion Icon lifetime achievement award
from the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), a
special prize reserved for "an individual whose signature style has had a
profound influence on fashion".
On April 24, 1992, Iman married British rock
musician David Bowie.
They have one daughter, Alexandria Zahra Jones, born August 15, 2000.
The roller coaster career of actress and singer Vanessa L. Williams provides an
excellent example of fortitude, resilience, and real talent winning out over
adversity. In 1983, the dark-skinned, raven-haired, green-eyed Williams made
history when she was the first black woman to be chosen Miss America. when Penthouse magazine published graphic nude photographs that she had posed
for years before, Williams lost her crown, two million dollars in product
endorsements, and the lead in a Broadway show; suddenly, America's sweetheart
found herself the subject of moral outrage, criticisms, and snickering jokes. But though her career and reputation were in shambles, Williams kept her dignity
and faith, and continued on. Today, she is a star on Broadway, in feature films, and on television, while also handling a successful musical career. "You have No Idea...", her tell-all memoir co-written with her mom, was released in April.
Vanessa Williams was born in March, 1963.
