Susan Rice is one of Elle's Capital Dames, the 10 Most Powerful Women in Washington, D. C.

"The native Washingtonian is a famously tough, forthright, and passionate advocate who, at 47, is already a veteran of nearly 20 years of foreign-policy and diplomatic service dating back to the first Clinton administration. A Rhodes Scholar, she trails a long list of first-this and youngest-that distinctions in her wake. At the UN she has dedicated herself to the proposition that taking that beleaguered institution seriously is more likely to get results than the scorn and derision dumped on it by previous U.S. ambassadors. And what results! Her hardheaded rallying of international support for toppling Libya’s Muammar Gadhafi was a high-risk play that paid off in spades. Lately, Iran and Syria’s brutal regimes have been in her crosshairs. We can’t wait to see what her ambitions turn out to be when she focuses them on DC itself."

Lesson From Her Childhood:
Her parents always told her to "never use race as an excuse or advantage." As a young girl she says she "dreamed of becoming the first U.S. Senator from the District of Columbia."  She also held "lingering fears" that her accomplishments would be diminished by people who attributed them to affirmative action.

Climbing the Career Ladder:
Secretary of State Madeleine Albright has been a longtime mentor and family friend to Rice. Albright urged Clinton to appoint Rice as Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs in 1997. Rice was not the first choice of Congressional Black Caucus leaders, who considered Rice a member of "Washington's assimilationist black elite". At a confirmation hearing chaired by Senator Jesse Helms, Rice, who attended the hearing along with her infant son, whom she was then nursing, made a great impression on Senators from both parties and "sailed through the confirmation process". Rice was Assistant Secretary for African Affairs until Clinton left office in 2001.

Family Life:
Dr. Rice was born in Washington, D.C.. Her father, Emmett J. Rice (1919-2011), was a Cornell University economics professor and governor of the Federal Reserve System. Her mother is education policy scholar Lois Dickson Fitt, currently at the Brookings Institution. Her brother, John Rice, received an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School and is the founder of Management Leadership for Tomorrow (an organization committed to developing top minority talent for leadership roles in the business and non-profit sector). Her maternal grandparents were born in Jamaica.

Susan Rice married ABC News producer Ian Officer Cameron (born in Victoria, British Columbia) in 1992 in Washington, D.C. at a chapel in The National Cathedral. They met as students at Stanford. They have two children.

How fascinating that Susan Rice seems to have it all and has built a stellar career at such a young age. Keep your eye on this rising star and see what her future holds.

Seniors and Sex-Tips for Older Men

Senior sex isn't the same as it was in your 20s — but it can still be satisfying. Contrary to common myths about sexuality and older adults, sexual interest is not just for the young. Many seniors continue to enjoy their sexuality into their 80s and beyond. A healthy sex life is not only fulfilling, but it's also good for other aspects of your life, including your physical health and self-esteem.

As men age, testosterone levels decline and changes in sexual function are common. These physiological changes can include:
A need for more stimulation to achieve and maintain an erection and orgasm, shorter orgasms, less forceful ejaculation and less semen ejaculated, and a longer time needed to achieve another erection after ejaculation.

James Patterson On Encouraging Kids To Read

Best-selling author James Patterson is a huge advocate of encouraging children to read — and not just because he’s a writer with selling books in mind.

Rather, he sees the benefits reading has provided for his own son, Jack, in soaring reading skills and an appreciation for good books.

Patterson, who has made millions from titles such as “Kiss The Girls,” “Tick Tock,” “Private,” and “Along Came a Spider” has just donated 200,000 books to service men and women stationed overseas.

Following are Patterson’s 10 principles for parents to encourage children’s reading:

  • Don’t leave the burden with schools — it’s your job to get kids excited about reading. But the solution is a lot simpler than you might think.
  • Read more! Here’s a simple but powerful truth that many parents and schools don’t act on: The more kids read, the better readers they become.
  • Pick out books they’ll love. Kids say the number one reason they don’t read more is because they can’t find books they like. The best way to get kids reading is to give them books they’ll gobble up.
  • Where to find great books and free books. ReadKiddoRead.com, GuysRead.com, Oprah.com, YALSA and ALA’s sites. Where to find free or low-cost books: ReadKiddoRead.com, FirstBook.org, ReadertoReader.org.
  • Don’t discriminate. Freedom of choice is key: Comics, re-reading a book, easy books and hard books are all fair game. Don’t say no if the book is helping a kid get into the reading habit.
  • Don’t fear change. We need to embrace new programs in our schools and communities. Good models: the Drop Everything and Read program; KIPP Schools’ ‘carry a book at all times’ rule; Sun Prairie Schools’ switch from texts to trade books.
  • Boys are squirrely. Boys’ differences in tastes need to be encouraged, not reprimanded. Too often, boy-appealing books like Guinness World Records or books with explosions and robots are disproportionately overlooked on schools’ recommended-reading lists.
  • Be a reading role model. The best role models for reading are at home. Moms and dads, it’s important that your kids see you reading.
  • Those in power should help. The Obamas, ESPN, NFL, or Hollywood could help if they start pressing the issue. The UK’s World Book Day is a great example of those in power getting kids reading.
  • You can take action. Please “like” this statement on Facebook or send me a note. Once we have a million — or even 10 million! — people backing this statement, I want to write Washington, D.C., and others in power and get something done about this issue. But, even if you don’t have a chance to do that, please go out, and pick out some great books for your kids. It’s one of the most important, effective, and caring things you can do for a child.

Living With Lupus

By Janel Green

In the fall of 2010, my skin started to experience severe irritation. The breakout began with my hands and then spread to my stomach, back and neck. I began seeing a dermatologist in order to determine what was wrong with my body. In November, I was officially diagnosed with Lupus. Identifying the problem was only the first step in the learning process. I've decided to put together a help list of information that I have discovered since being diagnosed in 2010.

10 Things I've Learned Since Living With Lupus

  1. Know Your Meds. It could take months before your medicine starts to work. In my case - 9 MONTHS!  My doctor failed to mention this fact to me. Now, whenever I get a new prescription, I ask what to expect.  When will it start to work? What are the side effects? Is there anything I can do to make taking it more tolerable? Don't be afraid to ask your doctor or pharmacist about new medication.
  2. Know The Side Effects. I never knew that the medicine that suppresses my immune system has crazy side effects. The pain medication I've been prescribed always makes me nauseous. Eventually, I will have to stop taking one of my prescriptions because it causes osteoporosis, cataracts, facial swelling, weight gain, muscle wasting, and diabetes. Another medicine I take causes damage to the retina over time resulting in loss of vision - its effects are irreversible. Because of this, I have to get my eyes checked every 3 months.
  3. Focus on the positive. Sometimes life sucks... but it could always be worse. I've learned to truly value the positive things in my life. There are days when I struggle to do simple things like brush my teeth, tie my shoes, or hug my husband. I personally know someone that had to have all their teeth removed because of an almost fatal reaction to a prescription medication. The medicine caused their tongue to turn black and swollen.  It put so much pressure on their teeth that they had to be extracted. My husband spent years struggling with a diabetic ulcer in his foot which eventually lead to an amputation. The point is that there is always someone going through something worse than you. Don’t spend too much time questioning why something bad is happening to you.
  4. Stay Out of the Sun. I never knew why my mom (who has Lupus) never went to Walt Disney World with the family when I was growing up. Exposure to the sun can activate the symptoms of Lupus. By limiting my time out in the sun, I can reduce the chance of skin irritation.
  5. Have a Bedtime.  I know that I can stay up till 3 in the morning playing video games...  But my body needs at least 7 hours of sleep or I might have a flare up the next day. To flare up means that your body's immune system is active, inappropriately releasing a variety of factors that lead to the inflammation in my joints, rashes, and a feeling of ickyness.
  6. Eliminate the Sodium. When I first got sick, my face, hands and feet would swell up like balloons. I eat a lot of vegetables, so for a snack I might eat some celery. There is sodium in celery. Once I discovered this I began to research the foods I ate so that I could monitor my salt intake.  I did not know that sodium is naturally found in many of the healthy foods I enjoy.  Now that I know this, I try not to add additional salt.
  7. Don't See Assistants. Sometimes the Doctor's office will schedule you with anyone except the actually Doctor. You don't have to see the Physician's Assistant. You don’t have to go to the Nurse Practitioner.  You can request the Physician. During a visit with a Nurse Practitioner, I complained about my skin breaking out and how uncomfortable I felt.  Her response was; “Ewww, you're making me itch!” Since then, I request my Rheumy and NOT his assistant.
  8. I'm Not The Only One. The scars on Seal’s face are caused by Discoid Lupus.  Toni Braxton has Microvascular Angina which is caused by Lupus.  Nick Canon has Lupus Nephritis which affects his kidneys.  Other celebs with this disease include rapper Trick Daddy, model Mercedes Yvette, and the late Michael Jackson.
  9. Lupus Can Be Lonely. There is one person in my life that I thought would be there for me, but when they found out I was sick they stopped talking to me.  That was a huge disappointment, but I will go on.
  10. I Can Live With Lupus. After being diagnosed with Lupus, I've become dedicated to learning about the disease and raising awareness for it. The color for Lupus Awareness is Purple. May is Lupus Awareness month. My favorite color is purple and I was married in the month of May. Coincidence?

If you are interested in learning more about this disease and how you can help find a cure, visit www.Lupus.org

Hidden Gems - Volume VI: The Wire (Season One)

The Wire is one of those television shows that's like a secret society. To the outside world, The Wire seems like any other show about a police unit assigned to investigate crime. The title implies that at one point, an undercover detective is going to infiltrate an underground crime syndicate and eventually have his shirt ripped off to expose a small microphone duct taped to his chest, while a henchman observantly exclaims to the crime boss; "HE'S WEARING A WIRE"!

To those of us in the know, The Wire is a subtle masterpiece of story telling, that pulls no punches and allows you to witness both sides of the struggle. On one side, you have a rag tag unit of cops; each with their own vices. On the opposite side, you have an organized crime family that runs like a well oiled machine.

Oh, and let's not forget about Omar.

The Angry Black Woman: Don't Buy the Hype

As I talk to my daughters and other young women in my community, I hear them say that they took certain actions so that they would not give the impression of being the stereotypical "angry black woman".  I'm here to say "don't buy the hype".  You have every reason to be angry and you can, if the mood strikes you, act like "an angry black woman".  Watch and see...the world will go on.

"The Hunger Games" Hits Screen-Offensive Racist Tweets Follow

I wasn't surprised when I learned that "The Hunger Games" became the third largest grossing weekend movie debut when it was released on Friday, March 23.  The box office take was $155 million for the opening weekend.

I was surprised and appalled by offensive racist tweets that followed the movie's success. It appears that some of the fans objected to Black actors being casted in three roles:

"Why is Rue a little black girl? stick with the book"

 "it ruined the movie"

"I'm pissed that Rue is black"

Amandla Stenberg
Lenny Kravitz was cast as stylist Cinna while District 11 tributes Rue and Thresh were portrayed by Amandla Stenberg and Dayo Okeniyi respectively. Suzanne Collins wrote that both Rue and Thresh have "dark brown skin", so readers should have been prepared for the casting.

Tweets about "feeling disgust", "wasted tears...wasted emotion" joined one fan who tweeted "call me racist but when I found out rue was black her death wasn't as sad #ihatemyself,". Another tweeted "Ewwww rue is black?? I'm not watching".

Dayo Okeniyi

These tweets highlight a shocking and offensive racist trend in the country which many turn a blind eye toward. I'm wondering if I was the only one surprised by this turn of events. Leave your comments and tell me what you're thinking.  I'd love to know.

A Heart for Dick Cheney

Former Vice President Dick Cheney is at the center of controversy once again after his recent heart transplant. Cheney, 71, received the new heart Saturday at a hospital in Falls Church, Va., after being on the cardiac transplant list for more than 20 months.

Many are asking if Cheney was too old to receive a new heart and whether money and influence cinched the deal in his favor.

SCOTUS Case: Life Without Parole for Teens

On March 20, the Supreme Court of the United States heard arguments about whether it is constitutional to sentence someone to life without the possibility of parole for a crime they committed as a juvenile-even homicide. Miller v. Alabama and Jackson v . Hobbs,  two cases involving teenage boys who committed homicide, may turn the court's reasoning based on a new understanding about brain development, which indicates that children under 18 have a diminished capacity for understanding the consequences of their action. Evan Miller and Kuntrell Jackson, the petitioners in these cases, are two of the seventy three persons serving a life without parole sentence for a crime committed by 14 year olds.

Photoshopped Michelle Obama With Natural Hair

The Huffington Post reported the following story:
WASHINGTON -- Actor Robert De Niro stumped for President Barack Obama on Monday night, joking that the country may not be ready for the white culture that each of the GOP presidential candidates would bring into the White House.

"Callista Gingrich. Karen Santorum. Ann Romney. Now do you really think our country is ready for a white First Lady?" De Niro asked a crowd of Obama supporters, according to a White House pool report. De Niro was hosting a fundraiser with Michelle Obama at his New York City restaurant, Locanda Verde.

The crowd "roared" in response to De Niro's question, according to the pool report, and De Niro said back, "Too soon, right?"

Imagine that Robert DeNiro had asked "Do you think the country is ready for a first lady with natural hair?"

The photoshopped image of Michelle Obama with natural hair has gone viral on the internet.  I wonder what the country's response to the first lady with natural hair would be.  I'd love to know what you think the response would be. Please leave your comment.

The Buzz on Possible Republican VP Nominee

When I watched the HBO Movie based on the best seller "Game Change", I gained new respect for the importance of the presidential candidate's running mate, the Vice Presidential choice. I won't go into John McCain's choice of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate, since the movie is available for viewing and the fact that most of us saw the drama unfold first hand in the 2008 Presidential Election. But, reviewing that significant event and its impact on the race makes me look forward to the RepublicanVP selection in the 2012 election.

Here's a list of those most often touted as potentials for the position, although, as in the case of Sarah Palin's selection, unmentioned candidate are always flying just under the political radar.

Collecting Credit Card Debt: Know The Facts

How much do you know about the statue of limitations on credit card debt? Credit card companies have specific rules and regulations that they must follow when it comes to collecting old debt.  Even if you're not late with credit card payments right now, you should know as much as possible about these rules. A major medical incident, foreclosure of your home, or loss of your job can be devastating to your financial situation. When it comes to old debt, knowledge is power and the more you know right now, the more you can help yourself down the line if you hit financial trouble.

VA Governor Signs Ultrasound Bill into Law

Amid continued protests from Democrats, Republican Governor Bob McDonnell on Wednesday signed into law a controversial bill requiring Virginia women to undergo an ultrasound procedure prior to having an abortion.

The bill sparked national debate this month over a provision that would have required many women to undergo transvaginal ultrasounds, which opponents decried as medically unnecessary and physically invasive. McDonnell, a conservative who opposes abortion rights, ultimately requested that mandate be stripped. The Virginia House of Delegates passed a revised version last week that allows women to "reject" a transvaginal ultrasound and instead opt for an abdominal ultrasound, which generally yields less information in the early stages of a pregnancy.

In a statement Wednesday, McDonnell reiterated his support for the bill, which he argues will provide additional information that "can help the mother make a fully informed decision" about having an abortion.

"This bill does not legally alter a woman's ability to make a choice regarding her pregnancy," the statement said. "It does, however, put Virginia in line with 23 other states that have some type of requirement that a woman be offered a view of an ultrasound before an abortion can be performed."

The bill is slated to go into effect on July 1.

Virginia will become the eighth state to require medical providers to administer ultrasounds on women before performing abortions. In Texas, the provider must also display and describe the image of the ultrasound.

Karen Santorum Defends "Righteous Rick"

Appearing on Piers Morgan's CNN show on the night before the Illinois Republican Primary, Karen Santorum defended her husband, Rick Santorum, former Pennsylvania Senator and current Republican presidential candidate. She addressed the campaign's social issues, including contraception and women's rights. Mrs. Santorum said that the media's portrayal of her husband "saddens her".  She says women have nothing to fear, stating "when it comes to contraceptives, he will do nothing on that issue".

Well, the women of Tennessee, Oklahoma, Alabama and Mississippi must agree with Karen Santorum; they voted for "Righteous Rick" in their recent Republican Primaries.  I'm afraid I don't agree with these women or Mrs. Santorum. I listen to what the candidate says now and what he wrote in his 2005 book "It Takes A Family".

The Optimist Creed

Promise Yourself -

To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.

To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet.

To make all your friends feel that there is something in them.

To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true.

To think only of the best, to work only for the best and expect only the best.

To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.

To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future.

To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile.

Prostate Cancer-Men Pay Attention

Cancer is a disease in which abnormal cells in the body grow out of control. When cancer starts in the prostate, it is called prostate cancer. The prostate is a walnut-sized organ located just below the bladder and in front of the rectum in men. It produces fluid that makes up a part of semen.

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men, and second only to lung cancer in the number of cancer deaths.

Hidden Gems - Volume V: MOO Online Printing

Since the dawn of the Social Media Era, I've managed to keep up with the major trends. I've done IRC, mIRC, Geocities, MySpace and Facebook. I've even been known to cheat on my Facebook page and visit Google+ from time to time.

I must admit that I arrived a little late to the blogosphere. I started my first official blog in April 2010. After that, I began contributing to other blogs and providing my unique perspective in other web communities. In January 2012, I helped my family create The Emerald Quill.

As part of the discussion on how to promote our family's website, several ideas were mentioned. One of the ideas that I had quickly dismissed was the idea of a business card.

A business card? To promote a website? On the internet? As you can tell, I wasn't to keen on the idea of using something so "20th Century" to promote a website in 2012. After all, we're going to be writing for the internet. People would rather point & click on a link instead of actually typing in some url written on a business card. And who uses business cards anymore? They are so plain and boring that I usually just put them in desk drawer and never look at them again. If I need the contact information of your business then I'll "Google it".

Eight Women On the Move

Everyone knows the women in the news, i.e. First Lady Michelle Obama, Mogul Oprah Winfrey, Entertainer Lady Gaga, and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. But there are other women who are on the move and making a contribution. Celebrate Women's History Month, take a moment and meet them here at the Emerald Quill.

Phaedra Ellis-Lamkins
As CEO of Green for All, a national organization aimed at decreasing poverty through the development of green energy jobs, Phaedra Ellis-Lamkins, 33, successfully lobbied to include in the much-lauded clean energy bill special provisions ensuring that low-income communities have access to jobs created by the proposed legislation.

Irene Rosenfeld
Chief Executive-Kraft Foods
Ranked #10 on Forbes 2011 list
of the 10 Most Powerful Women.

Lynn Nottage
Whether celebrating a turn-of-the-century seamstress in “Intimate Apparel”, a riches-to-rags career woman in “Fabulation” or a middle-class family on a quest to find their roots in “Mud, River, Stone”, Brooklyn-bred playwright Lynn Nottage, 45, puts Black women onstage and shows their fullness and complexity. She won the Pulitzer Prize for drama last April for “Ruined”, becoming the second Black woman to receive the award.

Kamala Harris
Oprah Winfrey called San Francisco district attorney “the female Barack Obama.” California’s first female African-American district attorney has solidified her superstar status by raising San Francisco’s felony conviction rate to 67 percent, the highest in a decade. She became the state’s attorney general.

Indra NooyiChairman and CEO-PepsiCo
Ranked #4 in Forbes 2011 list
of the 100 most powerful
women.

Congresswoman Barbara Lee
As chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, Congresswoman Lee is deeply committed to ending the spread of AIDS in the Black community. She has also successfully battled to eliminate funding for “abstinence-only” sex education and strongly supports condoms in prisons.

Kathie-Ann Joseph, M.D.

Harvard and Columbia graduate Dr. Kathie-Ann Joseph spearheaded an initiative with a life sciences research company to study Black women’s tumors and genes. She also plays a key role in setting diversity standards for cancer trials and research through the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project.

Ursula M. Burns
With less than 16 percent of Fortune 500 corporate officer positions held by women, according to Catalyst research, Burns, who is the CEO and Director of the Xerox Corporation, has shattered the idea that the only way to reach the highest office in the C-suite is through privilege and pedigree.

Rags to Riches: Beating Homelessness

When you hear the word "homeless", what image forms in your mind? Do you picture the unshaven guy standing in the middle of traffic asking for a handout? Maybe you see a man or woman sleeping in a car, a truck, or on the street in a cardboard box? Picture meeting these folks while they were a part of the nation's homeless: Oscar winner Halle Berry, Avatar lead actor Sam Worthington, Emmy award nominee Drew Carey, Emmy award winner Kelsey Grammer, and Talk show host/comedian David Letterman.

There are many more folks who were homeless before they became famous and fabulous:

Jim Carrey- actor, writer, producer, comedian lived in a car with his parents, older brother and sister until they moved to an outdoor camping tent in his married sister's back yard.

William Shatner-lived in a truck or a trailer with his family and his dog after the famous Star Trek series was cancelled.

Beyonce Charged With NIP-Shame, Shame

Beyonce and Baby Blue Ivy-
Mega star Beyonce is in the middle of yet another controversy, recently charged with NIP, nursing in public. Yes, everything is a media event nowadays and many nursing mothers, including Beyonce find that some people object to breast feeding in public. The new mother and her seven week old daughter Blue Ivy were spotted at a restaurant and, heaven forbid, the star was breastfeeding at the table. Some folks believe that mothers should hid this "shameful" practice, leaving the table and hiding out in the Ladies' Room to perform this dastardly deed.

As the mother of three, I am proud of the fact that I breastfed each of my children.  I don't remember leaving the table or hiding out, even though it's been years since my kids were of nursing age. I was completely oblivious to complaints or disapproval.  All I knew was that breastfeeding was good for babies and I committed myself to doing it as long as possible.

Anayah Sangodele-Ayoka and Jeanine Valrie, the co-founders and editors of FreetoBreastfeed.com, probably are ecstatic that a woman as famous as Beyonce will lend support for their efforts to encourage new African American mothers to do the same.

It's time for us to push aside any Puritanical attitudes and get over these outdated taboos. Right on Beyonce.  You do you, Boo!

Whites Outlive African-Americans by Up to Eight Years

In Washington, D. C.,  Black men die up to 13.8 years sooner than Caucasian men and Black women die 8.6 years sooner than white women.

An Urban Fantasy: The Hunger Games

In the tradition of Stieg Larsson's Millennium Trilogy (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire, and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest) and Pittacus Lore's Lorien Legacies (I Am Number Four), Suzanne Collins presents a spell-binding trilogy, staples on the best-seller lists. These novels feed the taste of the TV generation who thrives on reality television modeled after the hit series "Survivor".

The Hunger Games
(Book One)

In an unspecified future time, the United States of America has collapsed, weakened by drought, fire, famine, and war, to be replaced by Panem, a country divided into the Capitol and 12 districts.

Long ago the districts waged war on the Capitol and were defeated. As part of the surrender terms, each district agreed to send one boy and one girl to appear in an annual televised event called, "The Hunger Games," a fight to the death on live TV. Part entertainment, part brutal intimidation of the subjugated districts, the televised games are broadcasted throughout Panem as the 24 participants are forced to eliminate their competitors, literally, with all citizens required to watch.

When 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen's younger sister, Prim, is selected as the mining district's female representative, Katniss volunteers to take her place. She and her male counterpart, Peeta, the son of the town baker, will be pitted against bigger, stronger representatives who have trained for this their whole lives. Katniss, unlike the gladiators of old, is cold and calculating, but still likable. She has the attributes to be a winner. The plot is tense, dramatic, and engrossing as realistic characters form alliances and friendships in the face of overwhelming odds.

Katniss regards the Games as a death sentence never dreaming that circumstances would forced her to represent her district in the Games. The terrain, rules, and level of audience participation may change but one thing is constant: kill or be killed.
Booklists say (The Hunger Games) "is a superb tale of physical adventure, political suspense, and romance."
The Lionsgate movie The Hunger Games will be released on March 23,2012.

About Author Suzanne Collins

Suzanne Collins joins J. K. Rowling and Stephanie Meyer as an author of children's books that adults are eager to read. Since 1991, Suzanne Collins has been busy writing for children’s television. She has worked on the staffs of several Nickelodeon shows, including the Emmy-nominated hit Clarissa Explains it All and The Mystery Files of Shelby Woo. Most recently she was the Head Writer for Scholastic Entertainment’s Clifford’s Puppy Days, and a freelancer on Wow! Wow! Wubbzy!

While working on a Kids WB show called Generation O! she met children’s author James Proimos, who talked her into giving children’s books a try.

Thinking one day about Alice in Wonderland, she was struck by how pastoral the setting must seem to kids who, like her own, lived in urban surroundings. In New York City, you’re much more likely to fall down a manhole than a rabbit hole and, if you do, you’re not going to find a tea party. What you might find...? Well, that’s the story of Gregor the Overlander, the first book in her five-part fantasy/war series, The Underland Chronicles.

Her next series, The Hunger Games Trilogy, is an international bestseller.

Suzanne currently lives in Connecticut with her family and a pair of feral kittens they adopted from their backyard.

Hip-Hop's Top 20 Earners

The success of hip-hop’s top earners shows just how powerful the genre has become as a commercial force. Led by Jay-Z and Diddy, the top 20 on our list combined to earn $271 million, taking home cash from live shows, recorded music, endorsements and a wide range of other entrepreneurial ventures. Read on to see the full list.

1. Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter, $37 million
Hip-hop’s reigning Cash King continues to reap the benefits of a 10-year $150 million Live Nation deal, as well as stakes in the New Jersey Nets, the 40/40 Club chain, ad firm Translation and others. This year marked the first time he out-earned wife Beyonce since their marriage in 2008.

2. Sean "Diddy" Combs, $35 million
Music now accounts for less than 20% of earnings for the artist formerly known as Puff Daddy, thanks to big stakes in clothing lines Sean John and Enyce, record label Bad Boy and marketing firm Blue Flame. But it's his Ciroc vodka deal that led FORBES to estimate his net worth at $475 million this winter.

NCIS: 200 Episodes and Counting

Jethro Gibbs, Abby Sciuto, Ziva David, Tony DiNozzo
For the 200th episode of "NCIS," the show went a little "Wonderful Life," a little "Christmas Carol" and a little "Quantum Leap," as Agent Gibbs is shot in his favorite diner and before the bullet reaches him, real time freezes and Gibbs gets to look at his life.

A successful 'JAG' spin-off features criminal cases involving Navy and Marine personnel, handled by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS). Here's a list of the current cast:

Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs, (Mark Harmon)
The lead actor on NCIS is a real life hero who risked his life to save two teenage boys who were involved in a car accident outside of his home. Harmon used a sledge hammer from his garage to break the window out of their car then pulled them free so they wouldn't be burned to death, while his wife Pam Dawber called 911. He made every effort to downplay his role in saving their lives.

Gibbs joined the United States Marine Corps in 1976. he retired from the Marine Corps with the rank of Gunnery Sergeant. He is a dead shot marksman. He joined NIS, which later became NCIS, after his wife Shannon and only daughter Kelly were murdered in 1991. Gibbs later travelled to Mexico and murdered the drug dealer responsible, a crime he kept concealed for twenty years. Since then, he has been married and divorced three times, and is currently single. He is often shown in his basement building boats.

Special Agent Anthony DiNozzo,  (Michael Weatherly)
Michael's less-than-auspicious start in show business included a one-episode fill-in spot as Theo's roommate on "The Cosby Show."
He says "I did okay, but they never invited me back ... it was a one shot deal." Luckily, his gig on NCIS lasted quite a bit longer.

Tony DiNozzo comes from a wealthy family but was disowned by his father. He is a flirt, and has had his fair share of success in that department. He has a fondness for playing pranks on his co-workers.There is a great deal of romantic tension between Tony and Ziva. Despite his playboy manner and lighthearted nature, DiNozzo is frequently shown to be very sharp. Like Gibbs, has a limited patience for the scientific method and technical terms. DiNozzo is perhaps best known for his seemingly-endless film references; Ziva insists that his dying words will be "I've seen this film".

Special Agent Timothy McGee, (Sean Murray)
McGee was trained in biomedical engineering at Johns Hopkins University, and computer forensics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He also graduated the top of his class at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center.
McGee is also a writer, writing mystery crime novels including a national best seller, Deep Six, under the pseudonym Thom E. Gemcity (an anagram of his name), featuring characters based on his fellow co-workers and others from his everyday life. He also drives a silver Porsche Boxster as seen in the episode "Twisted Sister". He has Apple's iPhone smart phone, and uses it frequently on investigation. He owns a dog named Jethro.

Chief Medical Examiner Ducky Mallard, (David McCallum)
Dr. Mallard is a Scottish-born doctor, who underwent medical education at the University of Edinburgh Medical School, and served in the Royal Army Medical Corps. He has a "second talent", as Gibbs calls it, to be able to read people, which he expands in season four by studying psychology. In cases without actual bodies, he assists by using his psychological training to decipher the clues left by the perpetrators. Dr. Mallard is an eccentric character who often talks to the deceased. Ducky and Gibbs have worked together for many years with Ducky easily have been identified as Gibbs' closest and best friend.

Forensics Specialist Abby Sciuto, Pauley Perrette
Worked at a local funeral home in New Orleans, Louisiana all four years of high school. Both her parents were deaf.
SPECIAL SKILLS: Materials analysis, ballistics, computer science, blood and tissue analysis, American Sign Language [ASL], perfume making, ground penetrating radar operator, DNA analysis, reptile and rodent pet care.
Abby dresses in "Goth" attire, including numerous piercings, tattoos, body jewelry and wears homemade perfume that smells of gunpowder. She also appears to fear direct contact with sunlight.

Special Agent Ziva David, Cote de Pablo
Born in Santiago, Chile and raised in Miami, Florida. She attended  Carnegie Mellon University. She graduated in 2000 after studying music theater.
Ziva formerly held the post of Mossad Liaison Officer to NCIS, to which she was appointed following the murder of Special Agent Caitlin Todd by a rogue Mossad operative named Ari Haswari. Ziva was Ari's control officer and half-sister. After Agent Todd's death, she requested a liaison assignment to NCIS, where she subsequently joined Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs' team. At the end of season six, Ziva falls under suspicion as a spy for the Mossad.
Her specialty with the Mossad was espionage, assassination and terrorism and is highly trained in the martial arts. She speaks Hebrew, English, Arabic, Spanish, French, Italian, German, Russian and Turkish. Despite being fluent in English, she sometimes misinterprets idioms and phrases that have different meanings in other languages if translated directly; this is a running joke within the series. Ziva is very skilled with a knife and has been shown teaching her colleagues how to throw it properly. She is the one person Gibbs trusts with any type of firearm in difficult, potentially hazardous, situations. In her career, she has traveled extensively to countries including Egypt (where she met Jenny Shepard), Iraq, the United Kingdom and Morocco. In the season seven episode "Good Cop, Bad Cop" Ziva became a probationary NCIS Special Agent after she terminated her links with Mossad for good.

 Director Leon Vance (Rocky Carroll)
He is named Director after the death of Jenny Shepard. It has been revealed in the episode "Knockout" that he was originally from Ohio, but grew up in Chicago where he trained to be a boxer. In this episode, his wife stated that Vance attended the United States Naval Academy and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Marine Corps, but was forced to take a medical discharge before ever serving due to having undergone surgery to repair a detached retina suffered during his boxing career.
Vance is also a recurring character on the NCIS spin-off, NCIS Los Angeles.

Kreighton and Janel Green

I love this show and have watched the reruns until I almost know all the words. I have to dedicate this article to my favorite daughter-in-law Janel who has sat through show after show with me over many months. She deserves a NCIS merit badge!

(The guy peeping over her should is my son, EQ's webmaster.)
