Janet Evanovich's World of Stephanie Plum

American writer Janet Evanovich was born Janet Schneider on April 22, 1943. She began her career writing short contemporary romance novels under the pen name Steffie Hall, but gained fame authoring a series of contemporary mysteries featuring Stephanie Plum, a lingerie buyer from Trenton, New Jersey, who becomes a bounty hunter to make ends meet after losing her job. The 18 novels in this series consistently top the New York Times and Amazon bestseller lists, most recently with Explosive Eighteen.

When Janet had children, she chose to become a housewife like her mother. In her thirties, she began writing novels. She wrote two romances and submitted them for publishing. Still unable to find a publisher, she stopped writing and signed with a temporary employment agency. Several months after beginning work for them, she received an offer to buy her second romance manuscript for $2,000, which she considered an "astounding sum." For the next five years she continued to write category romances for Loveswept. Her work within the romance novel genre helped her learn to create likable characters and attractive leading men.

After finishing her twelfth romance, however, Janet realized that she was more interested in writing the action sequences in her novels. She took the next eighteen months to formulate a plan for what she actually wanted to write and the seed for the bounty hunter Stephanie Plum was born. In 1994, her initial romantic adventure, One for the Money, was published to good reviews and was named a New York Times notable book, a Publishers Weekly Best Book of 1994 and a USAToday Best Bet.

A film adaptation was produced by Tom Rosenberg for Lakeshore Entertainment, with Katherine Heigl playing the role of Stephanie Plum. Additional cast members include Jason O'Mara as Morelli, Sherri Shepherd as Lula, Daniel Sunjata as Ranger, Patrick Fischler as Vinnie Plum, John Leguizamo as Jimmy Alpha, and Debbie Reynolds as Grandma Mazur. Release is tentatively scheduled for January 27, 2012.

Janet lives in New Hampshire and Florida with her husband, Pete, whom she married in 1964. Members of Evanovich's family are employed by her company, Evanovich Inc, including her husband, Pete, son Peter, daughter Alexandra and son-in-law P.J. Heller.

During the week, Janet Evanovich works eight hours per day. On weekends she generally works for an additional four hours each day. She generally creates a brief outline before beginning a new book, with one or two sentences about what will happen in each chapter. Upon the release of a new book, she regularly goes on book tours. Her 2006 book signings attracted 2,000-3,000 people each. After her third book, and with the exception of Explosive Eighteen, all of the titles have been chosen from fan submissions.

One For the Money (Book One in the Stephanie Plum Series)
Stephanie Plum, an unemployed lingerie buyer, applies for a filing job with her cousin Vinnie, a bail bondsman. Vinnie's assistant, Connie, tells her the job is taken, but suggests she start apprehending some clients who have skipped out on their bonds, starting with Joe Morelli, vice cop and onetime sexual acquaintance of Stephanie. He is wanted for murder one. Stephanie is in financial trouble, and wants to take the job, as she will get a percentage of the $10,000 bail bond, so she blackmails Vinnie into employing her, by threatening to reveal his use of a duck for sexual gratification.

In trying to find Morelli, Plum attracts the attention of a heavyweight boxer involved in the murders of several women.

Explosive Eighteen (Book 18 in the Stephanie Plum Series)

Bounty hunter Stephanie Plum's life is set to blow sky high when international murder hits dangerously close to home, in this dynamite novel by Janet Evanovich.

Before Stephanie can even step foot off Flight 127 from Hawaii to Newark, she's knee deep in trouble. Her dream vacation turned into a nightmare, she's flying back to New Jersey solo, and someone who sounds like Sasquatch is snoring in row 22. Worse still, her seatmate never returned to the plane after the L.A. layover. Now he's dead, in a garbage can, waiting for curbside pickup. His killer could be anyone. The FBI, the fake FBI, and guns-for-hire are all looking for a photograph the dead man was supposed to be carrying.

Only one other person has seen the missing photograph - Stephanie Plum. Now she's the target, and she doesn't intend to end up in a garbage can. With the help of an FBI sketch artist Stephanie re-creates the person in the photo. Unfortunately the first sketch turns out to look like Tom Cruise, and the second sketch like Ashton Kutcher. Until Stephanie can improve her descriptive skills, she'll need to watch her back.

Over at the Bail Bonds Agency it's business as usual - until the bonds bus serving as Vinnie's temporary HQ goes up in smoke, Stephanie's wheelman, Lula, falls in love with their 'largest' FTA yet, lifetime arch nemesis Joyce Barnhardt moves into Stephanie's apartment, and everyone wants to know what happened in Hawaii?!

Morelli, Trenton's hottest cop, isn't talking about Hawaii. Ranger, the man of mystery, isn't talking about Hawaii. And all Stephanie is willing to say about her Hawaiian vacation is . . . It's complicated.
