Hidden Gems - Volume VI: The Wire (Season One)

The Wire is one of those television shows that's like a secret society. To the outside world, The Wire seems like any other show about a police unit assigned to investigate crime. The title implies that at one point, an undercover detective is going to infiltrate an underground crime syndicate and eventually have his shirt ripped off to expose a small microphone duct taped to his chest, while a henchman observantly exclaims to the crime boss; "HE'S WEARING A WIRE"!

To those of us in the know, The Wire is a subtle masterpiece of story telling, that pulls no punches and allows you to witness both sides of the struggle. On one side, you have a rag tag unit of cops; each with their own vices. On the opposite side, you have an organized crime family that runs like a well oiled machine.

Oh, and let's not forget about Omar.

Hidden Gems - Volume V: MOO Online Printing

Since the dawn of the Social Media Era, I've managed to keep up with the major trends. I've done IRC, mIRC, Geocities, MySpace and Facebook. I've even been known to cheat on my Facebook page and visit Google+ from time to time.

I must admit that I arrived a little late to the blogosphere. I started my first official blog in April 2010. After that, I began contributing to other blogs and providing my unique perspective in other web communities. In January 2012, I helped my family create The Emerald Quill.

As part of the discussion on how to promote our family's website, several ideas were mentioned. One of the ideas that I had quickly dismissed was the idea of a business card.

A business card? To promote a website? On the internet? As you can tell, I wasn't to keen on the idea of using something so "20th Century" to promote a website in 2012. After all, we're going to be writing for the internet. People would rather point & click on a link instead of actually typing in some url written on a business card. And who uses business cards anymore? They are so plain and boring that I usually just put them in desk drawer and never look at them again. If I need the contact information of your business then I'll "Google it".

Hidden Gems - Volume IV: The Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975

The Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975

As a young student being educated in the Chicago suburbs, the only Black historical figures I remember learning about in school were Fredrick Douglas, George Washington Carver, Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. At home, my parents and sisters introduced me to some of the influential Black leaders and figures that my school failed to mention - Malcolm X, Stokley Carmichael, Eldridge Cleaver, Medger Evers and Angela Davis to name a few.

Every February, during Black History Month, I still hear school kids say the same watered down stories of how "Rosa Parks was too tired to move to the back of the bus" or how "Harriet Tubman was a tour guide on the Underground Railroad". These historic events have been altered like a game of "telephone". They start out as events that impact an entire way of life, but as they are retold in history class, they are merely regulated to bulletin board blurbs framed in Kinte Cloth posted for 28 days a year.

Hidden Gems - Volume III: Luther

In the 70's and 80's it was Billy Dee. In the 90's and the 2K's it was Denzel. As the sun sets on Mr. Washington's reign as "Mr. Grown And Sexy", there are only a few candidates capable of inheriting the throne. Judging by the response from the women in my family, one merely has to utter the name "Idris" and they begin to swoon like an extra from the "A Heart is a House for Love" concert scene from the 1991 urban classic - The Five Heartbeats. Which brings me to the topic at hand; the BBC TV crime drama, Luther.

Hidden Gems - Volume II: Attack The Block

When I first heard the title "Attack The Block", I was convinced that some money hungry movie studio had manufactured yet another movie about a ragtag group of kids who use some unorthodox form of street dancing to escape the woes of the inner city. Since I'm getting too old to "Step Up 2: The Streets" or "Stomp The Yard", I didn't want to waste my time.

I thought to myself that I would just watch the movie trailer to see all the cool dance moves and spare myself from the "wrong side of the tracks" love story. I found the trailer online... Pressed Play... Mind Blown.

"Attack The Block" wasn't slang for street dancing. Attack The Block was a Hidden Gem - waiting to be discovered.

Hidden Gems - Volume One: Survivors

Every now and then I take the time to explore the layers of expired TV Shows, straight to video leftovers and Redbox rejects that occupy my Netflix queue.

Like a 21st century Ferdinand Magellan or the modern day version of Uncle Travelling Matt, I bravely set out on a quest to find undiscovered treasures to share with you.

With each Hidden Gems article, I will offer only the most valuable plunder as a tribute to the loyal readers of The Emerald Quill.

Fight The Stereotypes

I earned my High School Diploma from Rich Central High School in the suburban utopia of Olympia Fields, IL. I have a Bachelors of Arts degree in Mass Communications and Media Arts from Southern Illinois University. I have had a successful careers as a Media Producer, Radio Personality and Youth Development Professional. I've never been arrested. I've never even experimented with drugs.

I have spent my entire life attempting to be a positive person with a solid cultural background. I have studied African American History and I am a firm supporter of educating youth of all races in the trials and tribulations of the civil rights movement and the struggle for equality for Black People in the United States.

Unfortunately, I will always remember July 8th, 2011 as "The Day I Set Black People Back 50 Years".

The Gospel According To Deebo

Tom "Tiny" Lister, Jr. as Deebo

President of the United States, Professional Wrestler, Prison Inmate and Thug. If you look at Tiny Lister's resume, you'll find all of these characters included in an impressive list of roles dating back to 1984. Tiny Lister's Official Website boasts of an astounding 90 films in the span of about 20 years. You've seen Tiny in movies such as The Fifth Element, No Holds Barred and The Dark Knight. However, the character he is the most closely associated with is Deebo, the neighborhood bully from the 1995 movie, Friday.

A few years ago, I had the pleasure of witnessing Tiny in a different kind of role...
