Who Jumped The Broom in 2011?

Without question, the biggest wedding of the year was the union England’s Prince William and Kate Middleton. But, don’t dismiss the lavish ceremonies of African American entertainers and sports stars during 2011.

Take a look at some of the most talked about weddings in our community last year:

Son Jeffrey walked Sherri Sheppard down the aisle during her wedding ceremony to TV writer Lamar Sally. The 5’1” bride wore 6 inch heels to wedge the height gap with the 6’6” groom. Why the world needed to know that the couple was celibate for 11 months before the wedding puzzles me, but such is the trappings of stardom.

Sister, Sister star Tamera Mowry wed Fox News Correspondent Adam Housley in May. Her co-star and pregnant twin Tia was the matron of honor. The couple honeymooned in Athens.

Miami Heat star Chris Bosh wed Adrienne Williams in secret in April, 2011. The unforgettable and star-studded formal wedding took place in July.

New Orleans Hornets point guard Chris Paul married his college sweetheart Jada Crawley in September. Mega star LeBron James was a groomsman.

Pop star Monica jumped the broom with LA Laker Shannon Brown in July. The lavish ceremony follow the couple’s secret marriage last fall and included the bride’s gown with a pound train.

Cora Jakes, daughter of renowned pastor T. D. Jakes, wed Richard Coleman in June. Like Tamera Mowbry, Cora’s married sister was her matron of honor.

In September, Julie Pace Mitchell married her soul mate business executive Stephen L. Hightower III. She is one of the stars of The Young and the Restless. The couple wrote the vows they exchanged.

Television personality Niecy Nash tied the knot with electrical engineer Jay Tucker on May 28 in a fabulous ceremony in Malibu. The wedding party included The View’s Sherri Sheppard.

Lastly, Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon renewed their vows for the third time on their third wedding anniversary, a practice they have pledged to continue annually In 2011, the vows were exchanged in the LA hospital room after the birth of their twins. The Rev. Al Sharpton officiated in the ceremony.
