Rags to Riches: Beating Homelessness

When you hear the word "homeless", what image forms in your mind? Do you picture the unshaven guy standing in the middle of traffic asking for a handout? Maybe you see a man or woman sleeping in a car, a truck, or on the street in a cardboard box? Picture meeting these folks while they were a part of the nation's homeless: Oscar winner Halle Berry, Avatar lead actor Sam Worthington, Emmy award nominee Drew Carey, Emmy award winner Kelsey Grammer, and Talk show host/comedian David Letterman.

There are many more folks who were homeless before they became famous and fabulous:

William Shatner-lived in a truck or a trailer with his family and his dog after the famous Star Trek series was cancelled.

Daniel Craig-before he won the James Bond 007 role, he lived on a park bench in London while he was a struggling actor.

"Dr. Phil" McGraw-TV show host, best selling author, former psychologist, and multi-millionaire was homeless, living in a car with his dad until they moved to a room at the downtown YMCA for $5 per week.

Suze Orman-author and financial advisor, while working as a tree cutter in Berkely, CA, she lived in a Ford van.

Tyler Perry-actor-director-writer-producer-playwright went from living in his car to a $500 million enterprise.

Hilary Swank-Oscar winning actress lived in a Olds Delta 88 with her mom until a friend gave them a place to stay.

Shania Twain-Grammy winner singer lived in a homeless shelter at age 14 with her mother and siblings. At 16, she lived alone squatting in a vacant house and sleeping on a bus in Toronto.

John Woo-film director At the age of 7, his family lost everything in a fire and were homeless for a year living in a crude shelter and outdoor camping.

Homelessness is an issue in America that we must address.  Be sure that you do not judge, lest you be judged.  As one who spent a brief time in a women's shelter, I always remember, there but by the grace of God go I.
