On Friday, President Obama took a stand on conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh's war against Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke. He called Sandra to offer his support as she waited to appear on MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell Reports.
Limbaugh bashed the student activist on his show for several days, calling her a "slut" and a "prostitute" and suggesting that she provide videos of her sexual activities. The reason for this abuse is Sandra's testimony to a congressional committee of Democrats after Republican Darryl Issa refused to allow her to testify before the full committee. Her crime is her support of requiring employers to provide health care coverage that includes contraception.
Fluke said she thought the attacks were an attempt to silence her and other women who were speaking out on the issue.
White House spokesman Jay Carney said the President called Fluke to express his support, to express his disappointment that she had been the victim of inappropriate personal attacks, and to thank her for acting as a responsible citizen by speaking out on an issue of public policy. Limbaugh ridiculed the President for calling Fluke, saying the call was "compassionate" and that the President "was such a nice guy".
To the contrary, "Righteous" Rick Santorum called Limbaugh's remarks "absurd" and said Rush Limbaugh is an "Entertainer". Mitt Romney said "it was not language he would have used". I wonder where is their sense of decency and fairness. However, I was not surprised by their failure to engage Rush Limbaugh or to call his remarks foul and inappropriate. They left me with even less respect for them than I had before this incident.
I am sure that women across the country appreciate the President's call to Sandra Fluke and see his taking a stance by offering her his support as a manifestation of his sensitivity, wisdom and leadership.
