Hey, you in the chair. Have you ever looked up from your desk and realized you've been sitting for three, four or five hours? The average person sits for nine hours a day. It turns out that all that chair time isn't good for your health or your weight-loss efforts-even if you exercise consistently. Do your body and your mind a big favor. Make time (not much!) and space (just a bit) in your day to get up and move. Try these easy ways to move more.
At Work
- Pay a visit to co-workers instead of emailing or calling.
- Use the farthest restroom or take the long way to the copier.
- Stand, pace, or march in place when talking on the phone.
- Get up and stretch every 30 minutes to boost circulation and punch up your metabolism.
- Eat for 15 minutes; spend the rest of your lunch break cruising the neighborhood.
Don't just sit there, do something to engage your core and align your body. Sit up straight to tone abs. Correct posture means sitting with spine straight, shoulders back, and buttocks touching the back of the chair. fidget, fidget, fidget. A Mayo Clinic study found that people who moved the most during normal activities burned up to 692 more calories per day than those who didn't. So, fidget, shift your weight and change posture as often as you can. fit in office friendly moves such as stretches, wall push ups, lunges, and chair dips. hide out in the restroom, if necessary.
Around Town
- Park the car in distant spot and walk to your destination.
- Skip the drive-thru at banks, pharmacies, and fast-food joints. Park and walk inside.
- At sporting events, shun the bleachers and walk around the field or arena instead.
- Stand at the back of a meeting rather than sitting.
Rethink social outings. how about bowling vs. sitting at a bar. Take a walk during your shopping trip or casino visit. Make time every fifteen minutes or half hour to walk for ten minutes. It's easy to step up you game when you give it some thought.
On Vacation
- Walk around the terminal while waiting for the flight.
- Sign up for walking tours at you destination.
- Take public transportation instead of driving and get off a top or two early to walk.
- on a cruise, play shuffleboard, hit the gym, or check the view on every deck.
Lean people sit 150 minutes less per day on average than obese people do, adding up to 350 extra calories daily. Move your mindset. Think of sitting as the alternative, not the default. Be less efficient and make multiple trips and use fewer labor-saving devices. Hide the remote control!
On Your feet and Move!
