I was delighted to learn that Foyle's War is returning to MASTERPIECE MYSTERY! Three
new episodes of the popular detective series will air on PBS in the summer
of 2013.
The British
detective
drama television series, created by screenwriter and author Anthony Horowitz, was originally set during and shortly after World War II. In Season 8, "World
War II may be over, but Christopher Foyle's war against injustice and
wrongdoing rages
on," says MASTERPIECE executive producer Rebecca Eaton. "His very loyal
American fans will be thrilled."
The
original series is set during and after World War II in Hastings, Sussex, England, where Detective Chief Superintendent
Christopher Foyle
(Michael Kitchen)
attempts to catch criminals who are taking advantage of the confusion the war
has created. He is assisted by his driver Samantha "Sam" Stewart (Honeysuckle Weeks)
and Detective Sergeant Paul Milner (Anthony Howell).
In a later season, Milner is promoted to Dectective Inspector and takes off for a new location. Romance blooms between "Sam" and Foyle's son Andrew. runs for several seasons until the couple breaks up when her new love to be, Adam Wainwright, is introduced.
The new
series will see Foyle and loyal friend Sam in a
new post-war era as their worlds shift into those of MI5. Foyle
will focus his attention on the world of espionage
as he gathers secret intelligence in support of Britain's security, defense and
the Government's
foreign and economic policies. In
his new role as a Senior Intelligence Officer, Foyle discovers that the British establishment
is rife with communist sympathisers and traitors. In this delicately balanced period
in history, 1946-47, Foyle will use all his intelligence, guile and intuition
to keep the
country safe. Meanwhile,
Sam is happily married to local MP Adam and finding her feet as a wife with a
daunting role in local politics. Reunited with Foyle, she is also offered a
surprising new working
role.
One of the things I've loved about Foyle's War is the main character's quiet wisdom, methodical approach to his cases, and his unwavering honesty. He is most often underestimated by his foes, and in the end, he prevails. Many
of his cases concern profiteering,
the black market
and murder. Foyle often comes up against high-ranking officials in the British
military or intelligence services who would prefer that he mind his own
business, but he is tenacious in seeking justice.
Here's a quick rundown on the new season:
Season Eight Episode 1
The Eternity Ring
Foyle
returns from the U.S. and is soon approached by MI5, who want to recruit him to
investigate a Soviet spy ring operating at the heart of the Establishment.
Sam's husband has parliamentary ambitions.
Season Eight Episode 2
The Cage
Foyle investigates the death of several
high-ranking defectors from the U.S.S.R., and uncovers a mole working at an MI5
interrogation centre. Sam tries to help her husband with his by-election
campaign.
Season Eight Episode 3
Sundown
Foyle
is assigned to protect an eminent art historian, a former Nazi who is now an
important MI5 asset. Sam has some big news for Adam.
The
battle comes to Foyle in its own way as he probes post war-related cases of murder,
espionage, and treason.
Don't miss this splendid British series which combines mystery, history and period atmosphere with excellent acting and strong story lines.
