Cliven Bundy |
Here are the facts: Bundy has been allowing his cattle to graze on federal land for 20 years in violation of the law. He has lost every court battle and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has slapped Bundy with $1 million in accumulated fines, which Bundy has no intention of paying. Bundy says he doesn't "recognize the federal government as even existing". When BLM seized Bundy’s cows, arrested one of his 13 children and assaulted another, the incident was captured on video, which went viral on the Internet. Now this local dispute over a few heads of cattle catapulted into a national rallying point for anti-government groups, with conservative media and even a few Republican politicians helping to fan the flames.
This week The New York Times' Adam Nagourney reported the Nevada rancher is a grade-A, pro-slavery racist. The ones who took the Bundy bait are changing their stories.
As Nagourney describes it, Bundy is enjoying his new found fame by sharing his views on a number of policy issues, including race, welfare and whether the "Negro" hasn't been hurt by emancipation. “They abort their young children, they put their young men in jail, because they never learned how to pick cotton," Bundy said. "And I’ve often wondered, are they better off as slaves, picking cotton and having a family life and doing things, or are they better off under government subsidy? They didn’t get no more freedom. They got less freedom.” Last week, Mark Potok of the Southern Poverty Law Center argued that the Bundy militia's philosophy descends from "racist, anti-Semitic violent groups."

It's sad to see legislators support a position that the federal government has no right to hold Bundy accountable for his decision to disregard the law, even the candidate for NV Atty General Adam Laxalt.
